Developers / Re: small patch for auto.PlutoStorageDevices

Thanks Zaerc.  Still haven't had time to get back in and look at the tricks WebPaul gave for the source.  Hopefully this week.  Appreciate the patch though.

The myth source is standard, there is nothing special about it for mce, it is the plugin and player they are using to integrate into mce.  So honestly there is nothing to diff between the 20 fixes and svn, there will be a TON of stuff changed between the two of those, but none relating to mce.  We have to patch the source of the player and plugin so that it will work with the current myth.

Had semi given up on it due to the way the source is setup, but with WebPaul replying to my questions, I will see if I can do anything with it.  No promises though, at least till source gets a little more user friendly heh.  But maybe we can make something happen, I would love to use the system.

You aint a kiddin bout it being unfamiliar heh.  Thank you very much for replying.  Like I wanted to stress, I am not downing all your hard work, and again it is your guys project, so you do as you see fit.  But if wanting others to truly contribute it isn't in the most opportune way easy to do heh.  I will look at your examples and see if I can make heads or tails from it.  I would like to create new packages but maybe can manage that once I see how you make the binaries.  Hopefully someday it will move into a more general source to be able to compile from?  If not, like I said, it is your stuff!

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply.  I will see what I can turn up.

Users / Source kinda screwy?
« on: August 11, 2007, 10:31:45 am »
Well, I am by no means a programmer, never have been.  But am usually pretty good working with source and compiling things on my own after making whatever mods I need to make.  Am especially pretty good about Debian sources, by grabbing them, if patches are necessary then do so, and then change the control or rules files to suit.  But LinuxMCE's sources are completely out of this world.  Maybe they are normal but I find them way too tiresome to deal with.  Unless someone has a better way to properly compile individual packages that you may want, it just doesn't seem worth it.

I want to continue using everything that gets installed off the CD's, I just want to change a package here or there to suit.  But it doesn't seem like that is possible without compiling most of the packages beforehand?  Is there an easier way?  Or is it not possible for the LinuxMCE guys provide deb-src packages from all of their stuff, just so that we can make little changes?  That is how the rest of the debian world works.

By no means am I bitching, please don't take it as such.  For two reasons, one being this is a great product, and am very impressed with it.  And I do thrive to use it.  And two, hey it is their project, they can do things however they see fit as long as they are providing SOME sort of source they are sticking to the Open Source standards.  So thanks for that.  I am just stating how difficult it is to manage compared to everything else out there.  And maybe that is the only way they can keep things integrated together.

But if someone has an easier way to create new packages from the source files, and I mean specifically single packages, ie. Pluto-MythTV-Player and such.  I don't want to replace the entire system, just certain things.  Then please share.  Looking forward to any help.  I don't want to give up on this, it is very cool stuff.  But it just as is, doesn't seem worth it if you want to do some things a little different.  Hoping this can be resolved.

Thanks again for providing such a great product.  Here's hoping we can all work together with it!

Zaerc, that symlink got created when you ticked that box for VDR.  So removing it should be ok.  You are correct in thinking that as long as the config file in /etc/default is set to Enabled=0 that it won't continue any further, but to remove it from even attempting you would take out that symlink, and later you can always add it back in by ticking that box heh.  As far as DCERouter starting it or stopping it, that shouldn't be relevant with that config file, if it is set to Disabled, it is Disabled if DCERouter is running the init script.  It still won't run, unless it is ran manually somehow like /usr/bin/vdr   etc..  I am fairly proficient with VDR, and that's how we have always setup the startup scripts for them, but the truth be told, that is just how init systems handle things.  I am still curious just cuz I am born that way lol, to see if I can make VDR run with it heh.  It wouldn't work off the bat on the MD's till you compiled VDR on them as well, and use the Streamdev plugin on both the Core and MD's.  But should work.  But it wouldn't work with MCE's interface though, which is how I had Myth going before as well, skipping the interface.  But hopefully with source we can alleviate that.  Time shall tell.  Good luck, hope ya don't have to re-install, at least not just yet heh, more stuff to break and test first before re-installing again lol.

I don't know this for a fact since I haven't done it to mine yet.  But as far as stuff that starts on bootup, should mostly be in the runlevel it starts in, which I believe is runlevel 2.  Just type runlevel to find out what it currently runs in.  N 2 means runlevel 2.  Then check in /etc/rc2.d  for runlevel 2 again heh, and look for a symlink for something for either VDR or VideoLan that is causing you the fits.  You should be able to move that symlink to your home directory for now till you are sure you can delete it which I am sure is fine, but always move to be safe for now heh.  Hopefully you will find what you are looking for in there.  Another spot would be to check that /etc/default directory for any config files for what is the problem and disable them like you enabled the vdr one.

Hope that helps Zaerc, let me know.  I will enable mine when I get home to see what it breaks so maybe I can better help.

Heh, I will try and assist as soon as I can.  Some of us work for a living LMAO j/k!  But hopefully tonight I can try and play with a few things here and there.  So you aren't alone heh.

I don't mean to hassle you, but are you sure about changing that value?  Ah what the heck, I'll try it anyway.

Discoveries are made by not following the manual, and since we don't have a manual there will be a lot to discover... ;)

LMAO, as far as sure about enabling that value, YES, that is a standard config file to determine if a script should be ran or not.  If you look in that directory there should be more than just that one.  All your init scripts are supposed to I think heh, check there to find any other options to apply to the script so that users can adjust the 1 file instead of a large init file.  And to be able to enable or disable it on boot.  So that part is proper.  Whether that will get it running I still dunno, I would most likely still need to replace the vdr source with more updated or at least patched for my taste kinda like we did with myth.  But am interested to know what happens for ya!  Heh Guinea Pig! :)

Haven't tried yet myself, but in that default script you would want to change Enable=1 instead of 0.  But dunno why you still have issues unchecking it heh that's no fun!  Mine finally finished downloading last night and I installed it, but haven't had a chance to play yet.  Hopefully today.

Would have to look, but pretty sure the mythtv-setup.real was their version of myth.  And even though it isn't popping up on the screen that it is stopping the backend when you run mythtv-setup, it is.  Otherwise mythtv-setup would let you know the backend is still running.  To verify that, when you run mythtv-setup, shell in and do a ps -e|grep myth, shouldn't be there, and once you exit out of setup it should automatically restart it.  Now that the source is out, hopefully if I EVER get the downloads done heh and get set back up, we can make some proper stuff.

Doh!  Then ya, that kinda makes me leary as well heh.

This is on a system installed from the 2 CDs (1.1-0704), not of the DVD.  And you bet I removed this file, eventho the ssh port isn't be reachable from the outside directly.  The key in question:

I am PURELY guessing, since I haven't been able to get the sw yet due to the torrents not kicking in yet.  But I would think if you installed the Image DVD then you are using an image they installed and probably connected to, hence why there is knowledge of a connection.  You should be able to delete it.  I would hope that isn't there if you download the CD version and install yourself.

Again, pure speculation.  Being as they mentioned the DVD was an IMAGE of a system already installed.

Heh CHECK!.  Keep in mind now that we have sources, hopefully this can all be done properly, will have to play with it when time permits!

Ya, the plugin I am guessing or the player that is part of LinuxMCE, is what is complaining about the protocol.  With source, hopefully we can figure out how to update it to the proper database schema of the newer myth we install, so that it interfaces properly.  And ya, most source compiles won't automatically install into X by itself, only packages will that know to put the icons in there.

Started the torrent of the CD at lunch, didn't look promising on speed heh.  But hopefully it will be done tonight and I will see if I can find time to tinker some.  Thanks for trying it out.  At least we know that part is working.  Now to get the interface to work.

I haven't used the one that comes with Hauppauge but I assume it is still the same remote and ir.  I want to use mine as a blaster too, and I know the drivers are out there, just haven't had time myself to try and get it going.  Hopefully others have tried, and if not hopefully between all of us it won't be a major task.  Maybe this week I can find the time to work on it myself heh.
