Title: VDR Setup Issue
Post by: cjrmail2k on May 06, 2009, 12:31:15 am
Hello All,

I have been working on a linuxmce install for a while and I must say its a great accomplishment to have so many bits of software integrated into one system. Now I have the system set up and have added my vista shares, I can play movies and music from my shares but I am still battling a bit with the TV. I am sure this is a noob issue but I was hoping someone could help. I have been using the forums to get info and basically I have been trying Myth and apparently (according to totallymaxed who seems to be a bit of a legend) I should be using VDR here in the UK. I have managed to change to VDR and added the vdradmin-am page, I have all of that set up but still get no tv. Perhaps I have the wrong type of card for this type of signal but I did have to change a few things like my sources.list had archive.ubuntu.com instead of old-releases (stuff like that) before I could get things working. I checked my channels.conf file and everything seems to be right (the right channels are listed for a UK digital freeview signal. I am using a hauppauge pvr 150 card (the TV in socket). I can't seem to find any info on initializing the feed or setting the incoming socket...what other info do you guys need to help me? In vdradmin-am it says - no EPG information available.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I am using a build from the Gutsy DVD and am still quite new to linux although I have been using ubuntu since dapper I have only really used it as a desktop.

Thanks guys, I am SOOO close!!! I can almost taste the freeview!

Cheers

Hi there,

Your basic problem is that the Hauppauge PVR-150 is not a DVB card it is an analog TV card. You will need to add at least one (but ideally at least two) DVB-T or DVB-S tuner card to your Core.

The following DVB cards are suitable and work with LinuxMCE-0710 (in some cases with additional software updates);

- Hauppauge Nova-T Dingle tuner DVB-T http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-NOVA-T_PCI#New_Version (http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-NOVA-T_PCI#New_Version)
- Kworld Twin Tuner KW-DVB-T_399U http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Kworld_KW-DVB-T_399U (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Kworld_KW-DVB-T_399U)
- DVBworld HD-2104-USB-S2 http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/DVBworld_HD-2104-USB-S2 (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/DVBworld_HD-2104-USB-S2)

See this Wiki page http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Category:TV_Cards (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Category:TV_Cards) for a list of various analog & DVB TV cards that work with LinuxMCE

Hope the above helps.

All the best

Totallymaxed - do you have any feel for how well the KWorld 399U deals with weaker signals? As you may remember, I have been using the Nova-T-500 for some time, but don't really watch TV through it (use the TV tuner instead) because it doesn't seem to deal well with signals that are not very strong (even with the lna turned on), whereas my TV tuner has no difficulty at all with the same signals. I understand that this is partly because the signal is divided into 2 tuners, and partly because there is only a single amplifier for both. But even though I had a professional install a new antenna and cable, and direct it as well as possible to get the best possible signal, and that I am no more than 10kms from the transmitters, and have installed a signal booster, I still cannot get stable video through the card.

I'm wondering how well this USB stick deals with similar situations....

Well as ever its impossible to be precise about what you would experience in your location with the Kworld. But as ever for reasons that I have never had adequately explained all DVB-T and many DVB-S tuners have far less sensitive tuners than even the cheapest DVB STB... they also seem to be more sensitive to any imperfections in the received signal.

The Kworld is no better and no worse in this respect I am afraid... at home I get excellent reception from it. In the office here we get some artifacts on screen. The key thing is that the Kworld is much more stable as a USB device than the T500. I cant say its 100% usb stable but it is much better than the T500.

All the best

Cool thanks for that Andrew! I will have to buy one, is there a card where I can use 1 for DVB-T (freeview?) and Sky? And can you suggest a card that you would prefer to use (of course cheaper is better for me as long as the video quality is good...our signal strength is quite good in our area between 50 - 90% ...

Cheers for the advice.

There are cards that will have multiple front-ends to DVB-S/DVB-T and DVB-S but none that I am aware that will currently allow you to do a combination of those simultaneously. That sometimes a hardware limitation and in some cases a software one. I would suggest sticking with a single function card and trying to get at least two tuners of whatever type you choose.

As for Sky there are no legal ways to watch Sky using non-Sky hardware. We can't discuss anything relating to the infringement or reverse engineering of CA (Conditional Access) systems here from Sky or any other provider here.

You can legally control, stream or re-distribute the HDMI or other video output of a Sky Digibox to multiple rooms and there are other threads here where this has been discussed at length - do a search here for those.

Thanks again Andrew,

I have 2 contenders:

WinTV-Nova-T PCI (I think this only has one tuner)
WinTV-Nova-TD 500 (Dual tuner as you recommended)

Would you suggest the latter or would either one be fine? I will order it for delivery tomorrow whichever you sugegst!

About the sky signal, I do have a sky box and pay for the service, I just wanted to output the sky through my Hybrid but I will check the forums for this as it follows the freeview on my priority list.

Really appreciate the help mate!

I just remembered I have a WinTV-PVR-USB2, and I think that does digital TV, I will check this forum again tonight when I get home in case you know I am wrong but it seems to be pretty much PnP in lmce.

the hauppauge site says:
The WinTV-PVR-USB2 turns your PC or laptop into a digital video recorder

And I am hoping the 'digital' means the input type instead of the captured analog stream...

sorry for posting so many times, I just checked on the compatibility list and its an analog card...doh!

I guess teh Nova-T 500 is the one to get...if I wasn't so tight-fisted this would be easy :P

Hi again,

The Nova-T PCI is a single tuner card but is plug-n-play. See here http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-NOVA-T_PCI (http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-NOVA-T_PCI)

The Nova-TD 500 is the 'Diversity' model of the T500 that I believe is now supported but in the past these 'Diversity' models have caused problems as they do not use the same chipset as the 'normal' T500. On the other hand the standard T500 model is plug-n-play but does suffer some problems under 0710 as it uses onboard usb based tuners and an onboard usb hub...the tuners on this card have always suffered from usb disconnects periodically (search the Forum for numerous threads on this). I would suggest looking at other options like the Kworld DVB-T 399U (Dual tuner DVB-T) as this gets you two tuners and these are pretty well priced currently if you hunt around ;-)

All the best

Ah ok thats cool I will go with the Kworld DVB-T 399U - Are there any issues with using a usb 'stick' type device? Does it encode the signal or use the processor? I have a dual core (think AMD 5000+) processor though. Thanks for the advice, I checked the forums and the USB disconnect issue seems to be one hell of a headache!

When using a USB stick based tuner the data from the stick is passed over the USB bus obviously (if you had a large number of USB tuners attached this way you could potentially flood the USB bus with data...but it would be many more than two tuners).

The AMD 5000+ should be fine by the way - I use a Kworld in my home system and I only have a single core Pentium.

You will need to read this Wiki page I created to add the additional updated v4l lib to your installation to support the Kworld; http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Kworld_KW-DVB-T_399U (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Kworld_KW-DVB-T_399U)

Hey Andrew,

Ok I got it shipped this morning, installed the v4l deb and restarted, I still have no signal? I am using a rooftop aerial and I know it works because its the cable I have plugged into another TV most of the time. Wondering where I can go to check that the device is installed correctly. FYI I installed from the DVD if that makes any difference.

I went into the VDR admin page and uploaded the conf file for UK_london and I can see the channels listed in the vdr homepage...I feel as though I am so close now.

Ok it looks as though the device has not been picked up. In the web admin page, I checked the media director settings and there were 2 pvr-150 entries. I removed them but from the drop-down box, I don't see the K-World device. I think I am going to start again from fresh.

I did try to set my settings using Konsole as well, stopping VDR and using these instructions http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/VDR (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/VDR) but after some issues and a reboot, vdr doesnt seem to be running any more. No worries, I will report back once I have finished the rebuild...

This is what I get when trying to tune to any of the 'nearby' frequencies. I am near hemel hempstead so guess its either oxford or crystal palace. Still not sure if the device is being picked up correctly. If I try to upload the conf file (uk.london.channels), it gives me all of the channel listings but I am unable to actually get any feed. I am sure I would need to see the device available in pluto admin but I see nothing that links in with KWorld...any ideas?

dcerouter_112507:/home# scan -o vdr -p -u /usr/pluto/templates/vdr/uk.dvb-t.london.channels.conf > channels.conf
scanning /usr/pluto/templates/vdr/uk.dvb-t.london.channels.conf

Title: Re: VDR Setup Issue
Post by: totallymaxed on May 09, 2009, 03:58:56 pm
This is what I get when trying to tune to any of the 'nearby' frequencies. I am near hemel hempstead so guess its either oxford or crystal palace. Still not sure if the device is being picked up correctly. If I try to upload the conf file (uk.london.channels), it gives me all of the channel listings but I am unable to actually get any feed. I am sure I would need to see the device available in pluto admin but I see nothing that links in with KWorld...any ideas?

Take a look at this article on the Wiki; http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/VDR (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/VDR)... in particular look at the section on scanning for channels.

dcerouter_112507:~# cd /home
dcerouter_112507:/home# scan -o vdr -p -u /usr/pluto/templates/vdr/uk.dvb-t.london.channels.conf > channels.conf

Your use of the scan command above is wrong. For Crystal Palace you should have a line as below;

Code: [Select]
sudo scan -o vdr -p -u /usr/share/doc/dvb-utils/examples/scan/dvb-t/uk-CrystalPalace > channels.conf

See the wiki page I referred you to in my previous post for more details.

Morning mate,

Yes I tried that as well, I have just booted up the hybrid and tried it again with no joy. When I check in pluto-admin (wizard>devices>media directors) there is nothing listed under PVR capture cards. I did a fresh install yesterday and followed your wiki advice to install the v4l deb. All installed ok but how can I tell if the device is being detected? Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree but when I had the PVR-150, it was picked up as a PVR capture device. There is a list that I can select from but none refer to K-World.

Here is the result of my attempt this morning (I did stop VDR prior to scanning). This is the wiki I was working from yesterday.

P.S. I was getting permission denied until I did a

Thanks for sticking with me on this one mate

You will not see any indication in Web Admin for DVB devices... the PVR-150 is an analog card.

It looks to me like the DVDworld tuners are working fine...it maybe that you cannot get a adequate signal on Crystal Palace at your location. Is that the transmitter you would normally receive services from in your location?

Hey mate,

I checked on this site to see where I should be getting signal from:

http://www.wolfbane.com/articles/uka1map.htm (http://www.wolfbane.com/articles/uka1map.htm)

this is the result:
http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tva.exe?MAP=661,936?452,738 (http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tva.exe?MAP=661,936?452,738)

it appears as though I am using the correct one, I obviously don't have the hemel hempstead information file...and I know this is for analog signals but I guess the transmitters will be the same location for the new signal???

I live in Berkhamsted so I tried the Oxford one and the Crystal palace one.

looks as though I may be on a repeater...

http://www.ukfree.tv/txdetail.php?a=TL088045 (http://www.ukfree.tv/txdetail.php?a=TL088045)

any other ideas? It seems as though I am doing this right but I must be making a stupid mistake somewhere...

Also, from your wiki, I notice there are more frequencies?? that are tuned in...mine only has 1 in the CrystalPalace file, could this be the problem? Maybe you can post your content from your uk-CrystalPalace file please.

Yes I think thats the same as what I have. Strange. I checked my signal strength on my TV with builtin freeview and its not as high as I thought, it is around 45%. Do you have any other ideas?

Hmmm...its difficult to make a good comparison but I would say that 45% is way too low to receive any kind of reliable digital service. For example here at the office we get a 90% signal strength and 80% quality measurement from a Freeview STB we have installed for picture quality comparison.

So I would suggest that if you do not already have one you get either an aerial amplifier or a mast-head amplifier to boost the strength of your signal. A simple aerial amplifier is the simplest addition and is the lowest in cost and the least hassle to install (as it involves no climbing around on roofs!). Also double check all of your cables and connectors from the aerial socket itself right to the input to your Kworld tuner - look for any shorts from the centre core to the braided shield (even the smallest short between the two can destroy your signal quality).

All the best

Andrew

Thanks again mate, can you suggest an aerial amplifier brand? I live in a flat and so climbing on the roof may be treacherous!

Would this be ok?

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=36576 (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=36576)

I will also check my cabling because I made the cable in the flat but I was pretty careful about terminating it properly...

Just back from Maplin and they advised the best one to get was this one: (the fact that it was a few quid cheaper was also appealing)

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=223503 (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=223503)

Now I can keep the TV plugged in and have a second port for the Hybrid

I will update you tonight on my progress...

Evening Andrew,

I connected the unit up and I am now getting a 65% signal strength on BBC and an 82% on ITV MUX's so I hope that is enough to rule out the signal but I just tried to tune it again and got the same response

sudo /etc/init.d/vdr stop

I have to run a 'sudo su -' before I can run the scan command, does this matter? If I try to run the command 'sudo scan...' it fails with 'file does not exist (or something like that. If you need clarification on this I can advise when I get home from work tonight.

Hmmm...no I would wait at least until the Beta's ;-)

Can you fire up Konsole in kde's desktop and run the following ls command for me;

Code: [Select]
ls /lib/firmware/2.6.22-14-generic/<return>

Copy/Paste the output from the above command in a reply here please.

Cheers

Andrew

PS Enjoy the stag night...hope you've been in 'training'...the Scots know how to do a stag night ;-)

I have some other modules loaded because I have some TV cards and some other devices attached to my Core that you don't have installed. Apart from those differences your Core seems to have all the expected modules.

Could you attach a copy of your /var/log/syslog file please to your next post here. I can then see whether your KWorld Dual-Tuner is starting up correctly.

Hmmm...ok it looks like the modules needed by the KWorld are not loading - see the af9013 & af9015 errors in the syslog.

I would suggest re-installing the package again as described on my Wiki page here http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Kworld_KW-DVB-T_399U (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Kworld_KW-DVB-T_399U)

Hey mate, I have reinstalled the package, same problem.

I have attached my syslog file again...do you reckon the tuner could be faulty? Maybe I should plug it into my windows box just to double-check....anyway the wife is calling so I look forward to your response and will check back tomorrow!

Howdy Andrew,

Well oddly enough I plugged the K-World into my vista machine and it scanned and picked up all of the channels so at least I know that its working. Do you have any other suggestions. Maybe I should try and build from the CD's instead of the DVD's? Really stuck mate and really keen to get this box running...

Cheers

ok...so the KWorld is working fine. It must be that there is a problem with the installation of the driver package. Can you explain in detail each step you have taken (and what you see on screen) to install the driver package. There maybe a small error somewhere.

All the best

Ok, I download the tarball from your link, open it with ark and extract the V4L2xxxxxxx.deb file into the default location (/home/linuxmce). Also ensure that 'open location' is ticked. Once it is extracted, I click on it, this launches the Package installer. I select reinstall package, enter the linuxmce password and it loads successfully. I then reboot and then
Code: [Select]
sudo /etc/init.d/vdr stop and then run the scan command as in your post. Is there something else that I am missing?

Hi Andrew,

Sorry to keep bothering you mate but I was wondering if you managed to reproduce the issue at home? Also the guys at linuxmce seem to be working quite hard on 8.10, I was wondering how long they estimate until its usable?

Hi again,

No problem... no I could not reproduce it at all. The 399U is working fine for us.

0810 is coming along well and i expect it will get to beta pretty soon now.

depmod......

DKMS: install Completed.

then I rebooted the core, note I already had the Kworld in the core when installing, then before reboot I plugged up the antenna cable. This is what followed.

Any further Ideas? Does it look as though I did everything right? I didnt run any uninstalls for firmware but not sure if I needed to?

Cheers
Sput

Ok try shutting down your Core...and removing the mains power too...wait for 30secs then power up again. Then try again. It may be that the newer firmware was not loaded when you rebooted as the Kworld probably did a 'warm' boot. If no luck run the following command and paste the output here;

Code: [Select]
sudo dmesg |grep DVB <return>

All the best
