Title: Another Ion Net-top to look forward to (AspireRevo)

"The AspireRevo is debuting today alongside a plethora of other Acer wares, boasting a 1.6GHz Intel Atom 230 processor, up to 4GB of RAM, up to 250GB of HDD space, a 4-in-1 card reader, HDMI / VGA outputs, gigabit Ethernet, six USB 2.0 sockets, audio in / out, Windows Vista Home Premium / Basic and a svelte black and white enclosure that measures just 7.1- x 7.1- x 1.2-inches. The built-in Ion GPU means that this bugger is completely capable of handling 1080p (and thus, Blu-ray) content, DirectX 10 and even mildly demanding games such as Call of Duty 4 and Spore. Acer's staying mum on a price and release date, but we're still hearing that the late Q2 time frame is a safe bet. Check the full release just past the break"

I am not sure if this is the same as this guy \/, But it looks like it.

Ya, if linux support is there it would be about the best MD I can think of.

Ya, if linux support is there it would be about the best MD I can think of.

We're pretty sure the Ion platform will work fine. The GPU is a 9400 and we already have that working with recent nVidia drivers. The NIC is a RTL8168/9 I think so that should be fine too... so all in all it should be a pretty smooth ride to get this unit or another Ion working well.

As soon as we can get an Ion unit we will have one on the bench here for testing and i will report the progress/issue here and on the wiki :-)

All the best

Andrew

At first I was really excited about this unit - but no built in s/pdif out? That's another $130 or so for a usb solution. On second thought, I'm still pumped simply due to the sff... and the price!

This is just the first. I am sure small form factor motherboards will follow shortly after this comes out. Just look at all the other options for Atom set ups.

HDMI will be just fine for me.

Your correct. All the Eee Box's (B202, B204, B206) ship with an spdif adapter that cleverly adapts the stereo output jack on the back to optical out. The jack socket has the Laser emitter assembly built into it and the adapter provides a light-pipe to a standard optical socket.

That certainly is clever. Now the only question is, how long will we have to wait for this gift from above? I read somewhere about a  "back-to-school" release time frame for the US.

Play.com are listing 4 different models and IMO I'd go for the cheapest (http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/9606798/Acer-Aspire-Revo-Intel-Atom-N230-1-6GHz-1GB-8GB-SSD-Linux-Desktop-PC/Product.html) one and swap out the hard drive for something a bit bigger.

No point in paying for a Vista Premium license if you care going to put LMCE on it is there?

Rich

In fact the the low end model ( http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/9606798/Acer-Aspire-Revo-Intel-Atom-N230-1-6GHz-1GB-8GB-SSD-Linux-Desktop-PC/Product.html (http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/9606798/Acer-Aspire-Revo-Intel-Atom-N230-1-6GHz-1GB-8GB-SSD-Linux-Desktop-PC/Product.html) ) is the perfect spec for an MD in that it has no hard drive and no Windows licence either...neither of which are needed ;-)

Andrew,
When you recieve your test unit will you be trying it with 710, 810 or both?
Looking foward to hearing how it performs.

24" touchscreen panel, Atom/ION based, with built-in TV tuner and BluRay... wonder how the Linux BluRay project is going? Damned if I can remember where it was I found that thing!

We will test it with Dianemo-0710 (which is based on LinuxMCE-0710) and 0810-alphas for sure.

Andrew wrote this a while back on this thread http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=7904.0

"Yes we have several on test now....and with updated drivers they work great I am pleased to announce.

We have updated the nVidia & alsa packages;

- alsa-modules-1.0.20
- nvidia-glx_1.0.9639 (ie 180.51)

We have also updated/extended the avWizard to allow you to choose more output connectors (ie HDMI-2 as in the revo) and also to allow you choose to route the audio (PCM, 5.1 surround, DTS) over the HDMI connector if you wish to. These updated packages will all be in the 0810 trunk in the svn shortly...I hope next week...so will then be available in subsequent builds.

So far the Revo has performed really nicely. It has some minor limitations such as no S/PDIF out but now we have enabled HDMI Audio this really is not an issue. It has very simple and easy to fit VESA mounting bracket so that it can be mounted either directly onto the back of your TV screen or onto the wall behind your TV. The physical shape of Revo is well thought through for when its rear mounted - the power on/off button points upwards, making it easy to get to and all the USB/HDMI/VGA/eSata/Memory Card connectors are easily reached too (this is much better than on the Eee Box as they are more spaced out). The Revo has a very quiet fan that is barely audible even in a quiet bedroom (in non scientific tests I would say its as quiet as the ASUS Eee Box). We are testing the 2gb RAM/160gb model but there is also a 1gb RAM/8gb SSD model that comes with Ubuntu on the SSD and no Vista license...this looks to be the perfect model for LinuxMCE (you might need to add more RAM for 1080P though).

The above driver changes should also benefit other nVidia based motherboards & graphics cards (we have tested the HDMI audio on an ASUS P5N7A-VM http://wiki.linuxmce.com/index.php/ASUS_P5N7A-VM )"

Hi Andrew,

was thinking about getting one of these Revo's - the small one with 1GB RAM and no disk.

Andrew, do you know if the changes are already in the latest 0810 build ? I don't see any mentioning in the alpha2 wiki page here (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/LinuxMCE-0810_alpha2#20090628_.28alpha_2.24.29)

Thanks :)

All our Revo's are working fine. But you do need updated nVidia & Alsa packages etc.

I don't like the "etc." ;) what hides behind that ?
And you are probably using your version of Convergence LinuxMCE with some changes - or ?

Hi,
Would you please PM me, if you get your Revo to work when you gets it? I have tried for some time but without luck.

Sorry, I got "burned" with my current hardware, so I am not going to buy it before someone using stock 0810 confirms that it works.
I have spent weeks trying to get it stable and stutterfree running with 0710 + VDR and did not really succeed. I am now trying with 0810 and MythTV instead. Until now it look quite good, only the switching times are not so good on DVB-s - 4 seconds for a channel swith is a llittle much. And I have not yet tried on my 1080p TV. Util now I am only testing stability and functions on a hybrid test server I have got.

But what is your problem with the Revo ?

Greetings
Viking

Nothing hidden at all. Of course we are testing on our Dianemo-0710 build (with updated nVidia & Alsa packages) and also the 0810 Alpha builds too.

One friend of mine trying to install LMCE core to that nettop. He cannot install 0710 because there is a problem with Atheros WiFi. Did you have such problem and if so, how did you solve that?

I was told that my problem was because of the madwifi driver, but I can't find it anywhere in the disk image.

My Revo just stops booting when it comes to ath_pci. There isen't anyway of disabling wifi in BIOS, only all the network an that is a bad idea on a device that should netboot  :)

Best regards

just ssh into your Core and navigate into the relevant directory for the moonXX (ie the machine that is your Ion based MD);

cd /usr/pluto/diskless/XX/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/madwifi

The delete all the ath modules;

rm ath*

Now boot moonXX and your boot ptoblem should be solved.

All the best

Andrew

Obviously longterm we need to fix this problem with the ath drivers. Going to a more recent build for the driver may well be all that is needed.
