Title: Guidance on how to add a game console as a LMCE controlled device.
Post by: seth on March 23, 2009, 04:48:37 pm
 :)
Hi all. I have been recently playing around with the idea of adding a game console (Nintendo Wii) to my media menu, and when selecting it, have the core change the inputs on my TV to the Wii connection, and then when done using it, have LMCE switch the TV input back to the LMCE orbiter.

I am going to start by adding info about my TV/setup.

The TV is an older IR controlled 42" projection set. To switch from CVI (component video from the core/hybrid) to AV1, where the Wii is plugged in a channel down needs to be issued 2 times. And conversely to return channel up needs to be issued 2 times as well.

My first attempt at adding the Wii as an AV device, did not switch the input on my TV. There was a "Direct A/V" entry added to the menu selection, but this also did not change the TV channels.

Should this not be added as an AV device? I am sure that LMCE can control my TV. Does the volume, and the power quite well.

I guess the first thing to ask here, is should this be created as an AV device? Does a different device type need to be used?

I will look at trying this again this evening, but am I looking to start in the right place?

Thanks and Regards,

Seth

Hey Seth,

I have my ps3 setup as 'Av- Other/Misc' and it works great for me. I hit PS3 from any orbiter and it switches the TV and audio system to the proper inputs.

I would say a couple things:
-Double check the media pipes
-Double check your inputs.

Sadly, i didnt make notes on why I didnt use game console or another category.

You'll need a device template for your model of TV first off. Also it would be better if your TV will accept direct input selection rather than relative input selection as you describe in your post - its just more reliable. Some research into the direct Pronto codes for your TV would be a good place to start.

I am wondering if there is a way to use (whatever) LMCE remote to control PS3 using a bluetooth dongle? That would be great for watching movies, single remote that controls PS3

This will get you halfway there.  It's a USB stick that allows the PS3 to receive IR commands.

It also comes with a pretty little oblong boxy-thing that has buttons on it.  Perfect for filling up that last bit of free space in your trash can. ;D

True enough with the one I posted above.  It was the easy one to find.  Here's the better solution that includes the power on/off feature:

The URL you posted points to a device which allows to power off the PS3,
Quote
Note: This model will not Power ON the PS3

however, the http://shop.remoteshoppe.com/product.sc?productId=7 does support power on, for the amount of money, hari pointed out.

Thanks for pointing to the correct link.  I accidentally pasted in the wrong page.

Yeah.  Woof.  I wish I could justify that kinda coin.  An extra $80 for an 'on' button.

Then again, it does convert the IR signal to RF/bluetooth, so you don't have to take up a USB slot on your PS3.  And with the 'on/off' capability, it does enable fulfilling the quest to fully integrate the PS3 into linuxMCE.  And I've seen other posts here where people seriously consider spending $1K or more on an orbiter.

Oy.  Maybe someday.
