Title: Mobile Orbiters

Hello,

Is some one working on the mobile orbiters, is there a way to make them work, will java be a good solution, or flash.

native applications i think are out of discussion  but a java will work on most modern phones s60, wm6

is there a place to find the sources ??

will a bounty for this project will help the community to regain the mobile orbiter in a phone.

PlutoMO, BD, and BluetoothDongle are what you're interested in.

I could give hints regarding JSR082, RA and a serialize class for java. Someone with j2mee experience could hack the phone part together in a week or two.

I have some j2mee experience.. but I'm hip deep in Home Automation right now.
Maybe when I finish (if ever) I'll attempt it.

I think this is one of the best things, because not only it can be used as a remote control, but also will let you control your home from the outside, receive notifications.

i can port $ 400 to get this started,

Appreciate the $400.00..

This undertaking is quite large, considering my Java experience was quite a while ago.

Anyone else want to put up tokens to get this going? 

BTW, It LOOKS like 3 of us are going to attempt it together.. Myself, Hari, and TSCHAK.

KEEP IN MIND, we all have our OWN projects we are working on..

Hari's working on ZWAVE and PS3 porting, and the MUCH needed SQLCVS
TSCHAK is working on MAME (with HUGE WOW factor)
I'm working on ThreadedRuby/Insteon/PLCBUS

Heh, $400 doesn't split 3 ways well.. and for the amount of work, (guessing 3-4 weeks with all three of us) well, you get the picture..

I would suggest: this token $400. (if it's still offered) be put into a 'Donation Fund' (Once we get the Java Orbiter working of course)

This 'Donation Fund' can be used to sponsor further development.

What do you guys think?

What about a super lightweight Mobile Orbiter that's just the Web Orbiter (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Web_Orbiter) available over WAP (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Control_LinuxMCE_using_other_types_of_mobile_phones#WAP)?

That seems like the fastest way to get to at least basic functions. If someone wants to upgrade that kind of Mobile Orbiter, I'd love to see it work over local Bluetooth rather than over the WAP WWAN.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.. There is STILL a major stumbing block we have to hurdle..
That is JSR082 Support..

Basically, that's the API that allows Java to talk to Bluetooth.  If the phone doesn't support that, then it won't work.

I'm still trying to get the emulator to emulate JSR082.. for some reason, it's not working for me.

I've also pm'd Arron.b askingl if we could get the Java Serialize code... if it's already written (and we think it is, for the Tivo Project).

I'll let you know when he gets back to me.

Hmmm... how about Phones with Wifi? If Wifi is available I would suggest that is better... the N800 works beautifully!

Ideally, as with the current Orbiters, it should 'sense' if you are home, and switch to 'bluetooth' mode..
when it senses you are not at home, it switches to 'data' mode sms/gprs/whatever...

There's more of a chance of having JSR 082 support than there is of having 802.11 support..
Most phones, if not all newer ones, are bluetooth capable, whereas not all of them are wifi capable..

as you have no exact understanding of the Mobile Orbiter features I suggest you either try it out, watch the pluto presentations or look at the code.

I haven't made too much progress yet, but I think Hari has..

I have disected the MO code, and I see what it's doing...

The MO utilizes numeric keys and a 'menuing' system.. with simple background graphics..
Once we 'jump' through a few hurdles, it shouldn't be that hard.

I wouldn't use the same Web Orbiter image on a mobile device over WAP. I'd use a smaller image, and let people click on their phones the way they do on a screen.

But if you've got a real Mobile Orbiter that will be done anywhere close to converting the Web Orbiter, that's a welcome addition.

My experience with the Web orbiter has been very disappointing. Slow response, constant refreshing etc. Its pretty kludgy. Try it on an iPhone for frustration. Its more like a video game where you are trying to push the button while its live. And thats through a wifi connection.

I put $300 up for an Indian dev. to update the Symbian orbiter to rev. 3 early last year. He thought it would take a few weeks. Its still not done and he wants more money. This is a big project and not a quick one.

The Bluetooth response on the Symbian implementation is too slow to be satisfactory. It works but as a TV remote you will get frustrated.

The whole Web Orbiter is a kluge, but it does seem to work as HTTP over the LAN, and is better than nothing (and not limited to S60 phones).

why should http over ip over l2cap be faster than sending a few structs over rfcomm (BD)?

I don't know. I didn't say it would be. I said it would be faster than over WAP or GPRS etc, which all have to go across the entire Wireless Wide Area Network (and half the world) just to get across the room.
