The Xbox Media Center has a killer frontend, would be a mega system if integrated with the linuxmce/pluto backend

XBMC isn't Linux. Theoretically, you can get this working on the XBox, but it would require you to install linux on it with a 2.6 kernel. Unfortunately the 2.6 kernel can't safely see the xfat file system, which is what the xbox uses. This mean if you do this you will have to install Linux in native mode (formating your xbox hard drive and rendering it useless for gaming).

A problem with XBMC is that it doesn't seem to have network shares of its own.  So it is unable to share it's contents with the rest of the house.

I think XBMC has the greatest GUI around there.

But it is only a Orbiter, not a Server. So maybe the other way around might be interesting.
Use it as an Orbiter and integrate LinuxMCE.
I think it is the cheapest Orbiter you can get (without HighDef).
