Title: xbox 360 support
Post by: robertsaron on March 24, 2007, 03:04:26 am
Is there a way, without modding (ok maybe a software mod on a memory card) to get the xbox 360 to connect/network to linux MCE? I really despise Win MCE, and well Vista is "shiny"  not ready to go to that yet.  Its my brothers 360, and he plays Live all the time, and he is not too keen to mod it.

Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

i don't know what you mean axactly with "connect", but i am using my mp3s and pics stored on a linux server via the twonky media server

http://www.twonkyvision.com/Products/TwonkyMedia/index.html

it costs money, and doesn't support video.

Twonky does support video. I used it to test the Roku HD1000 with HD video. Never worked well enough to be much use (the protocol's and other settings were all out of whack for video) but that was 2 years ago and I'm sure Twonky is better now.

Because PS3 runs Ubuntu Linux it's an piece of cake on the PS3, but I own an X-BOX 360 so I to word like to get video to my X-BOX 360; an update is alable form Microsoft if you need or what MPEG 4, H.264, MOV, AVI, DVIX, XIVD, Video CD, Super Video CD, Google Video, TVIO to go, FLV, and/or Amazon Unbox support. If Microsoft wanted the X-BOX 360 to be an Media system on top of an game system I though they wound have give it Windows MCE + DISCover MY Games.

To clarify, even though the PS3 does run Ubuntu Linux, LinuxMCE will currently NOT run on the PS3. There are various porting issues that need to be resolved in regards to endianness issues, and the memory footprint of the PS3 may not be sufficient to run a full media director stack.

sure it has enough power, even without rsx. It's just a very special design. Donate a IBM cell blade system and we will try to port it :-)

or are you just talking out of your ass?

Will It can't be done out of the box; thier is an version of Ubuntu you can BitTorrent that repacecs or can be dual booted with the PS3 version with an more Windows like version of Ubuntu (the PS3's version is more like Windows CE then an desktop OS), and that's what I used install Linux MCE on that PS3 all it needed to do then was to add all the needed USB hardware and that was it.

I'm not an fan of wikis so ratter not use 1, mine was juck mailed for so many times that I asked Yahoo to take to down.

wow, man. You're awesome. So good, you don't even need instructions....

The Wiki is for the benefit of the community, we would appreciate it, if you actually do have a way to build LinuxMCE on PPC, to contribute it.

How did you fix the endianness issues? I know there are a few to deal with, but in which bits of the code?

Which UI currently runs on the PS3?

How did you deal with the more limited memory footprint when cross-compiling?

How did you patch MakeRelease to make proper packages?

Did you manage to get it to run with full RSX support?

Can you get us a full output of top while running?

Can you show us the output of ps -auwwx while LinuxMCE is running?

Can you show us ANYTHING to prove that you aren't full of shit? Anything at all?

Wow, that is amazing to have a MD on PS3, I could be tempted to buy one on that basis, could you (pretty please) write a step by step guide to building a PS3 install for LinuxMCE... maybe then LinuxMCE in the next version could even include a PXEboot (or PXEBoot based installer, or PS3 install ISO) for PS3, now that would be amazing!

The PS3 is capable of decoding two H264 1080p streams simultaneously. http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=7670569595744708604&ei=e6KpSMTaGpSIrgOPiu0Z&q=PS3+H264+1080p&vt=lf&hl=en (http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=7670569595744708604&ei=e6KpSMTaGpSIrgOPiu0Z&q=PS3+H264+1080p&vt=lf&hl=en)

At $400 for a unit, you wouldn't be able to find a better price/performance mark.

Oh, an in regards to the Xbox 360 stuff. MythTV supports video playback on the Xbox 360 over UPnP. Not sure if this version made it into LinuxMCE though.
