Title: Let's make better PXE netboot WIKI page
Post by: valent on June 26, 2010, 08:22:19 pm
I have read Netboot[1] and Automatic diskless boot of media directors[2] wiki pages and didn't get much info, then went to IRC and there got really good help from Thom and tkmedia, thanks once more guys.

From their info and going back to Wiki it is obvious that most of the info currently on wiki isn't for 0810 and should be updated.

I have started adding[3] what I have found so far but info from more senior and more knowledgeable guys is needed here.

Please join in and add what any relevant info you have.

I would also suggest merger Netboot[1] and Automatic diskless boot of media directors[2] wiki pages info one single page.

it would be good to include a reference to gPXE.  See http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=7930.0 (http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=7930.0) it provides an easier (IMHO) method of PXE booting a machine without a PXE boot rom

gPXE is a good program to use if you don't have netboot capabilities. I managed to get 9 Media Directors running using it (though I leter found out that PXE booting was present on the motherboards, it was just hidden with a different name and 3 options which all had to be enabled).

Guys if you have booted successfully Media Directors from 0810 Core please share any info that would be helpful, if you don't want to edit WIKI directly just write how you did it and I'll update the WIKI.

Is anybody opposed to me merging these two pages into one?

Hi , i followed the guide on:

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Automatic_diskless_boot_of_media_directors

and it worked.

I had to run: sudo /usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh

When i last do this in version 7.10, i think this was done automatically.

Indeed. for the period of the beta, this has to be done manually.

Can someone also point newbies what logs say what?
Because I see problems, but I can never locate the proper log.

I done that and any PC and laptop I tried starts to do PXE boot but after a few minutes of booting just fails. I'll first do a new clean LinuxMCE 0810 install just to make sure that the install is actually working correctly and that I didn't mess it up in the process of configuration.

If that fails I'll look into logs, PXE boot log messages should be located in /var/log/syslog or /var/log/pluto/syslog right? I'm currently away from my cores so can't check to make sure.
