Title: will not install correctly at all, now doing my 17th install
Post by: Riggs on June 02, 2010, 12:55:49 am
I have a Dell XPS Gen5, 3.2Ghz CPU, 3GB Ram, 120GB SATA Pri, 1TB SATA SEC, GeForce 8600 1GB, Creative Surround Sound 5.1 USB, running through optic. WinTV HVR 1800 MCE
JVC LT42-EX17 42in HDMI 1080i TV.
Yamaha Natural Sound Receiver HTR-5930 5.1.
Time Warner Cable Kansas City, no Set-top Box just straight to the TV

I have tried to install LinuxMCE 8.10, 16 times in two days and I’m now staring at the AV wizard for the 17th time, I have to select DVI/HDMI 720p, even though my TV is 42in 1080i HDMI, anything I try just won’t work I get blank screen.
I cannot get audio at all, I have tried selecting optic and analog all though I did get audio once when I selected analog and yes I am using and optic connection to my AV receiver, I’m am not getting audio right now.
I’m now looking at the next wizard the one that says “if you can see and hear me, select the ‘next` button and press enter”
No I don’t see her and I don’t hear her, I have a black box where the video is supposed to be and the  whole screen seems flash every so often.

Gonna wait 15 minutes and see what happens,
Any help would be excellent

When you inserted the DVD did it say reading DVD or something before poping up something about dvdcss (sorry been a while since seen it so cannot remember the exact screens).

You will need to run:
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2
to get DVD's to play.

Did the CD actually play? You could try copying over a mp3 to the system and checking to see if that works.

When you select UI settings in the initial wizard make sure you set it to UI1 and once everything is up and running properly you can re run wizard and try the other 2. This might fix your video in wizard problem.

Hopefully that might fix some of your issues.

Just burning a new dvd as i seen a new snapshot in the mirrors http://linuxmce.iptp.org/snapshots/ down at the bottom LinuxMCE-8.10-23002-i386.iso 01-Jun-2010 12:17  3.8G.
So i will give it a try, will update soon.

You should also read the following page:

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/AVWizard

There is a small addendum to that page:

You can also use the keys Q, W, and E, to use DVI 2, VGA 2, and Component 2, respectively. Your graphics card may be exposing your display in that manner.

Got through the wizards, still did not see the video with Sara, I have no internet on my internal network all though I can ping Google.com.
I have installed libdvd, and DVDs still will not play I select play then the screen goes back to the default with Flickr.

When you say 'still did not see the video with Sara' do you see anything on the screen?  I guess you must do if you get Flickr?

I suggest you post a diagram/schematic of your network to discuss further the internet on the internal network, also publish your ping times.

Also, if you are still having problems with sound I suggest you answer the following:
1.  does the machine have two sound cards - on board then USB for instance
2.  if you go to the terminal and run 'alsamixer' you can check if the digital channel is muted, mine was originally, it could be called PCM, S/PDIF, SPDIF or IEC958.  Use this http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Alsamixer (http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Alsamixer) page to help you navigate.

Yes I do see the wizards on screen just no video or sound in the wizards.
My sound card is USB creative x-fi surround sound 5.1, model SB1090, alsamixer did not work, tried all options listed on the page you linked.

As for network-
time Warner cable connected to eth0 on lmce
from eth1 on lmce to port 1 on a Linksys wrt 54gl router.
from the Linksys I have 2 laptops and one picture frame on wifi
And 1 PC on Ethernet cable.

Say never use it, go to web admin, under Advanced/Configuration/Unknown Devices, look for the last device in the list, and not the mac address. Please post that in here, and maybe even check, what network device is using this.

I'm not terribly likely to be of any real help, here, but thought I'd mention that I've received this notification at somewhat random interval, since 0710, IIRC, or at least the earliest available builds of 0810...  I'd always just assumed that someone else' IP-Cam had somehow found it's way onto my network, and edited my security accordingly (I'm paranoid - If I can't verify what / who a new device is, I'll not ignore until I've investigated).  Guess I'll have to look deeper into it, the next time it appears.

If I may ask, did you happen to have any smartphones with cameras on the wifi net, when these notifications occurred?  We've always got at least 2 around, and randomly on the wifi, so just wondering if that might have this sort of effect?

I disconnected all PDAs and pocket PC's from the router, I just don't understand why lmce has full internet, yet the over computers on the land dont.
All I can do is ping sites, ie will say website fount waiting for reply and that's it.

you may want to try the following on your core:

Code: [Select]
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 mtu 9000

does that help?

Network:

Do you have DHCP turned on on the Linksys wrt54gl router?  you should set it up like a switch, I did a Wiki page on how to do that if you don't know how: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Linksys_WRT54G (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Linksys_WRT54G)

I have this router model and it is working fine for me (when configured like the page).

Sound:

Are you saying you only have a USB sound card, there is no onboard sound?

Other:

I also get the "I detected a new plug and play device: DCS-5300(D-LINK / IP CAMERAS) should I use it" message, there are a couple of threads about what that could be but follow Posde's advice.

Only the USB card is connected, I took the sound audigy2 ZS out as it doesn't have optic only coaxial. I did configure the router like it said on the wiki, the mtu command came up with. "SIOCSIFMTU: Invalid argument"

OK my networking issue has got to be a problem with linuxmce, I took the router out of the equation and just did a crossover cable from the laptop to lmce and I got the same problem, windows says I have internet I can ping any address like Google, yahoo and get a reply, even Skype is on line I can't call out though.
If I try ie or Firefox, Google chrome, it will just say website found waiting for a reply.
I'm stuck

you need to execute the command as:

Code: [Select]
sudo ifconfig eth0 mtu 576

the issue is that you're executing the command as a user, when you need root access.

$20,000 says the internet connection will work, the moment you execute the above command.

Unfortunately, I can't help anymore at this point. Everything should be working.

If you run iptables -t nat -L

you'll see that the NAT rules are in place to forward packets from the internal interface to the external one.

There is a variable in your setup, that is not known to me.

I'm sorry.

Long shot here but try disabling and then re-enabling the firewall in webadmin
then retest your internet connection.

There is something about your network that you aren't telling us. something you're doing. something being implicitly done...

This part of the system works perfectly when properly set up with compatible hardware.

Eth1 is a pci, connected to port 1 on a Linksys wrt54gl running dd-wrt setup how it says on the wiki wan port is empty

did you turn off its DHCP on the LAN ports? you should probably set the router's wan port into static IP mode.

the DHCP is turned off on the router, i have set the ip address as 192.168.80.130, i have left the wan port as dhcp and tried static, i have tried setting the router to router mode i basically looked though all the wikis and forums and tried everything. i even tried installing the stock linksys firmware, and tomato. I then you connected the laptop direct to eth1 in windows vista and ubuntu and it still didn't work

none of the network based pnp functions work with one network card. If you do, you'll also need to disable the dhcp server in the web admin.

So stripped down to the min:

Cable modem --> eth0 - eth1 --> Vista or Ubuntu laptop

Gives:
1.  No internet on laptop
2.  Internet is OK on the core
3.  you can ping externally and skype reports online

is that a fair assessment?

I dont understand why i can ping out side and have windows tell me i have internet, if i open up a browser it will say website found waiting for a reply.
Its like there is something blocking it, i did check the firewall, im am now just running the install script for a fresh install it should be done in a few minutes if you want i can post the script out put, I did see some errors there

Riggs, paste an lspci as well, if you could.

This sounds similar to the symptoms I had with my Realtek r8168 NIC being incorrectly detected and driven by the r8169 drivers.

Sorry not read all posts in detail but you replied to Thom - "No all standard cat5 connected to the router" but you had mentioned you were using one from core to laptop? No cross over should be needed in the setup.

Did you try core to laptop directly with standard network cable?

ok no matter what cable i try, a direct connection from lappy to core i can only ping and not browse

Are you able to ping 8.8.8.8 from your laptop?
Title: Re: will not install correctly at all, now doing my 17th install
Post by: Riggs on June 04, 2010, 02:33:08 pm
sudo iptables -t nat -L

Chain PREROUTING (policy ACCEPT)
target     prot opt source               destination

Chain POSTROUTING (policy ACCEPT)
target     prot opt source               destination
MASQUERADE  all  --  192.168.80.0/24     !192.168.80.0/24

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target     prot opt source               destination

And yes i can ping 8.8.8.8

If you can ping 8.8.8.8 from the laptop, check the DNS Server you have defined on your laptop.

its set through DHCP from the core it seems to resolve names ok as i can ping google.com or any address, I could set it to google dns and test i guess

Google DNS is just the same no change

This is so weird I have setup a gateway, even a PDC and a website server before using the same cables and router, I could use the server for the core but its a 1U half depth so it like a jet taking off.
If i could use the server as a core i could store it in the outside store room, but how would i get TV I cant put PCI in it, the HDHomerun wont work because Time Warner is still analog in Kansas.

TV Tuners can be placed anywhere in the house, MythTV will distribute them appropriately, so you can place them in a media director.

So if i was to give on the Dell as a hybrid and use it as a MD then the Jet as the core outside, yes it would be very powerful but it will bug me why the Dell never made it and i would have net cables every where for the wife to moan about.
Just a though could it be one of the net-cards that are faulty in some weird way
