I running 8.10 beta2 and the screen goes blank about every 15 minutes when playing back recorded shows (either from myth or ripped DVDs). Is there a way to disable this "feature?"
Could it be every 10 minutes?
I had this as well and attributed it to the turn off monitor setting for each MD. By logging into the web admin -> orbiters (link on the side of the screen) then selecting the one where you are experiencing the problems you will probably see that there is a screensaver and monitor timeout set to 600 seconds. I changed these to 0 and it fixed my problems.
Not sure what these even do... screensaver still plays just fine as the background in UI2- not sure what it would do for UI1. It does, for WebDTs, prevent the screen from turning black.
I never timed it so it could just as well be 10 minutes. Thanks for the recommendation. I went ahead and set "Seconds before screen saver" to zero. Hopefully that will address the issue.
Thanks again, Tom
It has been less than a day, but have you had a chance to test this?
If that fixes the problem, I want to post a new ticket on Trac...
No, it did not fix the problem.
Is this a core or md? What hardware are you using? This was happening with EeeBox B202's with older bios's.

I decided to reboot my system and test it one more time and now it appears to be behaving correctly. Previously, I had selected the "Update" button from the Orbiters page and then did a "Full Regen All". I had also set "Seconds before power off" to zero as well after setting "Seconds before screen saver" to zero did not help. Neither setting appeared to address the issue until I rebooted.
Just for the record I am running a hybrid with:
- GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard
- AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor Model HDZ720WFGIBOX
- MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210 512MB 64-bit DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card
Maybe unrelated.
Read that this type of issue have been seen if you have power mgmt enabled in bios together with some nvidia cards.
Just a wild guess, check it out.
Found the info at some page on geexbox wiki.

I am also getting this problem with the blanking screen after 10 minutes - I have noticed that it is only if the KDE desktop has been loaded. After a reboot, and if you don't load KDE desktop, the problem does not occur. Then, as soon as you go into KDE desktop for whatever reason, and then watch media later, the blanking occurs. I assume it's something to do with the screensaver?
Is this a known problem? How do I submit it as a bug if it is not known?
Cheers.
I continue to have this problem. I timed it and it happens exactly at 15 minutes. I have noticed that it doesn't happen all of the time so purps explanation may be the issue. I haven't gotten around to checking my bios yet to see if it is an issue as well.
Try going into the settings in the KDE desktop itself and find the screensaver option. System Settings >> Desktop >> Screensaver. I just found it, and disabled it. Only time will tell if it has worked..... (about 15 minutes :))
If that does turn out to be the problem then this should be filed as a new trac ticket. http://svn.linuxmce.org/trac.cgi/newticket

Done http://svn.linuxmce.org/trac.cgi/ticket/600
That fixed the problem for me! Thanks!!!
Good stuff.
I did an install from scratch last week (2010-10-08) using new-installer-latest.tar.gz and this issue is still present.
I checked for the new file (~/.kde/share/config/kscreensaverrc) noted in http://svn.linuxmce.org/trac.cgi/ticket/600 (http://svn.linuxmce.org/trac.cgi/ticket/600) but it does not exist.
/usr/pluto/bin/Start_KDE.sh on my computer has the additional code but it obviously has never been executed. So either Start_KDE.sh has never been executed (where is it invoked?) or kcheckrunning returned a non-zero status when executed within the script (I tried kcheckrunning from within a terminal and it returned a zero result as expected).
Start_KDE.sh is executed every time you select Start KDE from the onscreen orbiter.
Is this your core/hybrid or an MD? The screensaver fix for the core is reported and a fix provided in http://svn.linuxmce.org/trac.cgi/ticket/827. This defect patch has not yet been applied to the current builds.

A little un-related but did you know that Thom's Padorbiter for webdt's implements the Start KDE button and you can use it to invoke all kinds of things on a webdt, then use a messagesend to bring orbiter focus back.
OK. I'm running a hybrid so that explains the behavior. Thanks!
And no, I did not know about the WebDT.
Your welcome. :)
