I have acquired a lirc text file for a device I am trying to control, can anyone tell me where to put it or a maybe a link to instructions?

If there is no device template for it then you will have to create one. Your conf file gets copied into the configuration parameter.
The best bet is have a look at an existing remote device template that uses lirc. create one the same.
