What is the cheapest / lowend motherboard / cpu etc..... combination that allows h.264 720 or 1080p playback using LinuxMCE ?
A must is the small formfactor.
I am afraid to build overkill'ed MDs, these days you have to worry about power consumption and such. ;)

You need a lot of power to playback 1080p streams!
intel core2duo can play it!

It will really probably depend on how small you want the machine hooked up to your computer to be. I'm looking at having the smallest Media Director I can put together myself, and am considering http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813153077 with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111304.
This is probably not the cheapest solution however. If you're willing to have a slightly bigger case sitting around your TV, you can get away with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115031 and any cheap motherboard that has nVidia graphics and DVI/HDMI out. I think something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130126 might fit the bill, but honestly you'd have to do a little looking around to make sure that the nVidia 7150 video chipset is working well with the newest release.
