Hello,

  Is it now possible to format only a certain partition and not the entire HD when installing using the single layer
DVD ?

NO... all of the LinuxMCE DVD's will completely erase the whole drive you install too!

I suspect it can be done (as with the beta2), but you'd have to create the partition(s) in advance, do the install manually and configure the bootloader yourself, not recommended.

EDIT:

Better to just use the CD installer if you want to be able to partition.
