I don't think you will be able to use that. It is an IrDA dongle and this is not (and can't be) supported by lirc.

The problem I think is that the device you linked for is for IR communication, but IR remote control works slightly different and is usually incompatible.  At least that is my understanding.

Hi Richard!
Godd to see a fellow south african. I have searched for irda devices as well, and think that we will have to import them. Perhaps we can do both together, or perhaps even try to get a couple of orders to save on import costs.
I was thinking of buying that one from sybaritic without checking if it is compatible. good thing i checked this thread!

Just to clarify - you do NOT want IrDA devices as these do not generally work as Infrared receivers.

The USB-UIRT is what you want or you can build a homebrew based serial adapter (for a few dollars/rand)

There are other devices that also work , look at www.lirc.org

I am using an iguanaWorks device at the moment but I have had to modify source code to get it working for now.

I just received my USB-UIRT. On the device itself it is written "Pat Pend". I thought it was based on (or the idea based on) an open source project.
