Title: Motherboard with HDMI?
Post by: colinjones on August 29, 2007, 09:54:05 PM
Just bumping this question...

I am looking for a motherboard that is known as compatible, with decent integrated NVIDIA chipset (or something else that will support full UI2), that has an HDMI output.

Has anyone any experience that can share??

How about this one? Abit AN-M2HD Socket AM2 mATX Motherboard Nvidia Geforce7050PV - any experiences? Compatible?

Not really - but someone else started a topic talking about Abit motherboards with HDMI, and I am hoping for an answer on that one soon! I think this thread is stale, so do a search for that one with Abit and HDMI as search terms...

Next question is, do the video drivers work with LMCE and has anybody tried the board overall for compatibility???

Oh man, I'm sorry. I heard horrible things about that Biostar board....supposedly they rushed it to market to try to beat Abit to the punch, and it's got all sorts of weird problems. One can only hope it's not design-related and that a bios update will iron them out eventually.

Gigabyte has some too (see http://www.giga-byte.es/products/mb/specs/ga-ma69g-s3h_10.html) the problem is that all MB with hdmi i could find where not able of displaying 1080p video (just 768) as they have graphics chipsets that don't support full HD (are just HD ready).

Hi Colin,

We are testing the MSI MS-7329 motherboard (see link to manual below) this has on-board 6150 graphics and an HDMI port;

http://217.110.237.67/Manuals/7329-engl%20v1.0%20-%20MS-7329%20(G52-73291X1).pdf

We're running this board at 720p over component & HDMI and it performs beautifully. The board supports 1080p too but we have not tested that yet... will give feedback when we do ;-)

We've tested it with UI2 + Overlay and it works great... but I don't think we've tested UI2 + transparency. I'll take a look at that on Monday and post an update here then.

Any results on 1080p HDMI?

How about the other model, MSI K9AGM2-FIH (http://www.google.com/products?q=MSI+K9AGM2-FIH&btnG=Search&show=dd&scoring=p) that lacks the RCA outputs, but has HDMI and 5.1 analog/SPDIF for only about $50-65?

The MSI K9AGM2-FIH uses an AMD ATI chipset so you are at the mercy of the ATI Linux drivers. LMCE uses all of the most advanced (and difficult/buggy/ hard to implement) features of the graphics interface. And only Nvidia has support for them today, just barely above experimental status. There has been lots of discussion about ATI, and Intel drivers but support for compositing and opengl isn't what it is for nvidia yet. As soon as it is available on something else and it works better we will all move.

OK, how about the MSI K9NGM3-FIH, which uses nVidia GeForce7150? Starting at $80 (http://castle.pricewatch.com/s/search.asp?s=hdmi&group1=2&sci=2&c=Motherboards). Or the $95 eVGA 112-CK-NF77-A1, GeForce 7150, or $96 eVGA 112-CK-NF77-A1, GeForce 7100?

The 7050 requires the new drivers which are still buggy and unstable. Life just isn't easy for Linux users.

I also got the Abit AN-M2HD--came in the mail today.  I'm sad to hear that there are problems with 7050--I am a newb trying out Linux and LinuxMCE and I thought I'd be fine as long as i stuck with nvida chipsets and nvidia onboard graphics.  :-\ I hope it all works.

Ok I have taken some time to do some tests this morning and I can confirm that the MSI MS-7329 MB supports UI2 + Overlay & UI2 + Alpha blending using the standard lmce-0704 nVidia drivers at 720p over Component & HDMI (I did not have a 1080p screens at hand to test that resolution against).

Performance is inline with all nVidia graphics hardware we have tested todate in that with UI2 + Alpha Blending selected we see a very slight amount of 'tearing' in the video when there is medium to fast horizontal motion of the camera. I personally find this quite distracting when watching TV/DVD's. Setting UI2 + Overlay removes this "tearing' completely and gives silky smooth video @ 720p.

Andrew - do you have any idea whether this tearing is due to drivers, or simply a performance thing? I'm assuming that a driver bug with the sync could be ironed out over time, whereas a performance issue is more likely to be with us to stay, unless there is a tuning issue in the driver??

My thinking is that it is performance related and not a bug as such. I think running UI2 with Alpha Blending just means there is whole lot more computation going on and this stresses the hardware/driver to the point where it can't quite keep up and the "tearing" occurs because whole video frames cannot be draw into the video buffer fast enough. I might be wrong... but it seems like a logical possibility especially since turning Alpha Blending off fixes it 100%.

Do we know whether one of the higher chipsets have the extra grunt? Sounds like only a marginal thing... I haven't looked at the specs, but I'm presuming there are pretty significant performance capability differences between the various members of the 6xxx, 7xxx and 8xxx series. If this is happening on the 6.....

Over time we have tested pretty much all the nVidia cards and onboard chipsets... none could handle UI2 + Alpha Blending without suffering some tearing in video playback. I am sure this to do with the drivers still not delivering the full performance that the nVidia hardware is capable of.

Anymore updates on the MSI MS-7329?  Also, how easy was the MCE install and would it be a good board to user a both a core and MDE if you only had one machine?  Thanks for your input.

The MS-7329 is on longterm test with us now and has proved to be very stable and reliable with an excellent set of features. We are mainly testing it as a Hybrid/Core, a role which it performs very well, and in tests it has supported 5 MD's quite happily.

I was browsing for a MB and found this at newegg about a Biostar MB:

one of reviewers said it was ubuntu compatible.  Not a thorough review but thought it was relevant to the thread.

I have very good luck with abit AN-M2HD so far I have been running 0704 and now beta 2 0710.
I have two now 1 as Hybrid/Core and another as MD seem very stable so far.

Just what I can get from my hd homerun currently only have a 720 P to test it on (looks good so far)
UI3 is fine and no more tearing like in 0704
Video drivers worked from start.

Im just trying to follow this thread and came up with a couple of questions:

1.  What specifically does it mean when you say "tearing" (does it relate to the image quality and if so, what do you see if the image is "tearing"?)

2.  I'm looking to build my own HTPC and was curious what a "Hybrid/Core" is or what it means?

3.  I would imagine that when I build my HTPC, I would want it to be 1080P/HDMI capable...  Right???  Isn't that the best quality picture qualtity?

I'm sure I will have more questions later, just trying to stay in the loop.  How in the world did all of you get so smart about all this stuff, Ive read a little and it seems that everything I read goes right over my head...  Im very excited about trying this, but Linux and LMCE is kicking my butt...

Thanks
Junior

You should do some research first. If you just used Wikipedia, you'd know about tearing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tearing). The LMCE wiki would tell you about hybrid/Core (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Special:Search?search=hybrid%2Fcore&go=Go). Where the wiki isn't detailed or current, you can search the forums (http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?action=search).

Just take a little time. Soon enough you'll be explaining it to someone else :).
