Title: RoamingOrb 1.01 available now from the Apple iTunes App Store - Free Download
Post by: totallymaxed on October 19, 2010, 03:41:31 PM
After a lot of intense development work and testing we now finally have an iOS Orbiter available for LinuxMCE - big thanks to Foxi352

Search for 'RoamingOrb' in the App store either on your iOS device or from inside iTunes on your laptop or PC (you will need a valid iTunes account to download the App - but it is free)

Foxi352 has done a brilliant job getting RoamingOrb 1.01 out the door and I can tell you the Apple App approvals process threw us a 'curve ball' at the 11th hour...but we worked around that and 1.01 is up on the App store. A bit of a milestone in so many ways really;

- Firstly its an App many people here in the community have wanted for a long time now
- Its an App developed by a developer who is new to the community - we need many more too!
- Its an example of how if you focus in on a limited part of this project and your given the right docs and support/encouragement you can achieve a lot very quickly
- ...and lastly but definitely not least its the first small(ish) step on a path to a re-engineered model for Orbiters and building UI's for LinuxMCE (its not the only path to this...witness the great research & experimentation going on here in Clutter by tschak909 and others)

Now as ever with software development, and this is elongated by the App development process under iOS, RoamingOrb 1.01 is missing a number of refinements that are now in testing. Expanding testing beyond a small group is not easy under iOS because each iOS devices UDID has to be 'burnt' into the App before release...but I am sure there will be an updated RoamingOrb App in the near future that will incorporate a number of refinements. Having said that the 1.01 release has gone through a lot of testing by Foxi352 and my team at CHT on every current iOS device platform (iPad included) and all current iOS device releases and we believe it is incredibly stable. In fact I can honestly say that I have never seen any kind of fatal bug at all during testing.

As to speed...yes its blindingly fast compared to all other Touch Orbiters and in use I think you will quickly find it a joy to use - I do ;-)

Now in the next few weeks alongside RoamingOrb 1.01 CHT will release another iOS Orbiter, Dianemo iOS Orbiter, which is based on the RoamingOrb codebase (a later revision than 1.01 though) but with a number of enhancements and also a number of features that are only relevant to Dianemo installations. Foxi352 is the lead Dev for both versions by the way. The Dianemo iOS Orbiter (we may change its name...as it does not roll off the tongue!) will also be Free to download from the App store and will be fully compatible with both Dianemo & LinuxMCE. I will outline the Dianemo iOS Orbiters features soon here.

The source code for both RoamingOrb & Dianemo iOS Orbiter will be freely available soon too - probably in the svn but possibly via the Wiki (you'll know as son as this is decided)

See here for RoamingOrb Wiki page; http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/RoamingOrb

See here for Dianemo iOS Orbiter Wiki page; http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Dianemo_iOS_Orbiter

All the best

Just installed and started using it. WOW!  ;D

Needless to say, this just took the accessibility and usability of our family's Linuxmce system through the roof.

Thanks so much to all those involved!

Foxi352 deserves all the credit... we've just been 'cheering him on' from the sidelines really and helping with testing etc.

Its great to see our first Forum users download it at last!!

Enjoy!

Wow!  From the screenshots this looks great!

Any chance you could get it working on iOS 3.1.3?  I'd love to use it on my first generation phones.

We are testing a version now that is compatible with iOS 3.1.3

So that answer is yes we should have iOS 3.1.3 compatibility in the next release assuming we don't hit any unforeseen issues ;-)

Hi
Noobie here who hasn't built his md's yet because he is still trying to figure out how it can all fit together. Am I understanding it correctly? If I buy an Apple something eg. Ipad this can be used as a mobile orbiter on any of the md's, I don't have to worry about usb-uirt's, remotes, etc anymore.?

Here's hoping!

Thanks

Hi Bushtech,

Yes the RoamingOrb App can be used as a touch based Orbiter... ie a remote control for your system. Almost all of our Dianemo systems now ship in this configuration in fact as most customers are choosing to use their iPhone's, iPod's or increasingly iPad's as the UI to control their homes.

If you have devices attached to your system that need to be controlled in some way ie via IR or rs232 interfaces then you will still need those control interfaces for those purposes. But you would not need to use an USB-UIRT with an IR Remote for control as you can do everything with the RoamingOrb App.

RoamingOrb 1.01 is compatible with all current iOS devices as long as they are able to run iOS 3.2 or later.

Thanks Andrew

That's fantastic, well done to you and Foxi352!

So I can use the Touch Orbiter to start playing a movie from the core via the md. Should I want to adjust settings like Dolby or 5ch stereo on my AVR I just grab the AVR's remote.?

Thanks

You can use any Touch Orbiter (or any Orbiter in fact) to control an MD by selecting the MD's Room or Entertainment Area from the on-screen menu of the Touch Orbiter. Once you have set your Touch Orbiter to the MD's Room then you can use the Touch orbiter to control the devices in that Room eg the MD or any devices controlled by it or the system generally in the room.

However if you have an Amplifier in the MD's room and you want to control that Amplifier then you will need some kind of control interface to control it with eg an IR Blaster such as the USB-UIRT or an RS232 interface. These control interfaces send the commands to the device they are configured to control eg in your case your Amplifier and these commands are triggered by you (or automatically in some situations by the system) when you touch a UI control on the Touch Orbiter's display (ie in this case the RoamingOrb App running on an iOS device).

Once you have started the movie playing you can choose another room from your Touch Orbiter and control that without effecting the playback of the media you kicked off in the original room.

Hope the above helps... Search the Forum for more details on these basics of the system.

All the best

Hi Andrew,

Been playing a bit more with this yesterday and today. Still very much enjoying the new toy :)

A couple questions that should not be taken to mean that I'm complaining about what you've provided or suggesting you need to do more work:

1) Is multitasking support possible? You'd obviously want to avoid battery drainage from constant polling by doing a suspend-state type thing if the protocol allows. The splash screen on reopening the app is pretty quick, but I'm wondering if it could be eliminated or made faster.

2) Is there any possible future for follow-me via blue-tooth in this app?

Thanks again!

Yes multitasking support is possible but currently it did not seem to make much sense - later as we add more event handling capabilities to the iOS Orbiter then it might ie Low Disc space event received by Orbiter make user aware of that if App is not in the foreground etc etc. Currently because of the proxy_orbiters design if you exit the iOS Orbiter and then launch it again it returns to exactly where you were. The only downside is the slight pause when it attemps to re-establish communication with the Core - yes the Splash adds somewhat to that but not that much in reality as there is processing/comms happening in parallel. However we are looking at removing the Splash and and adding an 'About' screen that would contain the splash image and some credits, version No. and promotional info for the project etc... the about screen would be accessed from a new UI panel that is under consideration.

2) Is there any possible future for follow-me via blue-tooth in this app?
Yes I think Follow-me maybe possible...but Foxi352 is the best person to comment on that as it will need low-level access to the iOS Bluetooth API's and i am not sure if that is possible. Clearly it would be useful too if the the iOS Orbiter (and other Touch Orbiters where the host OS allows this type of capability) could integrate with other Apps/software on the device so that some level of inter App integration is possible.

Thanks again!

Your welcome...feedback & ideas/suggestions are very welcome indeed :-)

We have a version running on 3.1.3. now mainly for older iPod's. I will submit it to the app store today. Of course i can't tell you when apple will review and authorize it :-) Keep looking for updates ... :-)

Hi !

Multitasking would be possible. I will get an iPhone 4 in about 3 weeks. I can't test it on my existing iPhone3, but until now i did not see the interest in multitasking. What should the app do in the background ?

Concerning the splash screen: It does not take any time. in fact the system shows the screen while reconnecting to the proxy_orb on your core. Of course we could eliminate the splash screen, but that would give you an empty screen :-) It's not that the splash has a 5 seconds timer to show our nice logo or something like that.

I find your follow-me idea great. We will investigate in that direction. I think some core modifications would need to be done, but nothing is impossible ;-)

Thank you for your feedback.

Like you say, when you open reopen the app it has to reconnect to the proxy_orb which is why the splash-screen gets displayed. I'm wondering if the reconnect can be bypassed somehow.

When RoamingOrb is backgrounded maybe it can tell the core "i've been backgrounded" so that the core doesn't think it's dead when it stops responding to pings (I'm assuming this is how the protocol currently works). When re-opening RoamingOrb, the app can resume functioning as if it was never closed (maybe it just does a screen refresh).

Again, I don't know the details of the communication protocol, so this may be impossible without major structural changes. Thanks for listening to my ideas!

Hmmm ... When you start the app it opens a connection to the core and that connection keeps open until you exit the app, or until it is broken (example: quick reloading the dce router).

What i probably could do is backgrounding the app and keeping the connection open (not sure if that is possible as long as i don't have a corresponding device). But you have to keep in mind that the app can also be used over 3G where disconnections are not rare.

Anyhow, i will investigate in that direction as soon as i have a multitasking enabled device ....

Another factor is that on a 3G connection where the user may have limitations on their mobile dataplan they might leave the App open but in the background and chew up a lot of their data plan allowance - without realising it. On the other hand the amount of data we're moving when the app is idle and no screen changes are happening is pretty tiny so this may not really be an issue. On a Wifi connection this is not a problem of course.

I still think the big win with multi-tasking is the ability for a future version of the App to alert you, when its in the background, to some system event...eg the door bell was pressed, A security alert has been triggered...if the App is sitting their it can alert the user and bring the event to the users attention etc.

All the best

I am investigating with push notifications for that, so even if your app is not started you could be notified of such events.

Concerning the data plan: I am atm evaluating another technique together with uplink. We try to use weborbiter_command and weborbiter_image instead of directly speak to the proxy_orb plugin.
This will then work on standard http port (future remote access) and this may touch battery life. It will also make backgrounding easier as you simply don't poll while in background, but you don't have to disconnect and reconnect everytime.
I am just concerned if this have the same performance. I will do first tests on weekend and let you know.

Theres only 1 thing I need to do to make it work and I can't even do that!

"When inside you have at least to set the server IP and the server port of your proxy orbiter"
Where do I find out this info?
-The IP is that of the core? Router=127.0.0.1 or Internal= 192.168.80.1 (Eth0:1) or External=192.168.1.102 dhcp(eth0)?
-Where do I find the port?

Sorry to have to ask about even the simple things!

192.168.80.1 is the default core IP, unless you want to be able to use RoamingOrb outside of your home network (via 3G). In that case you need to use your public internet IP which you can find by visiting http://www.whatsmyip.org/ from your CORE.

Have you created a weborbiter in the past? If not, follow the wiki instructions.

If you have, go to your webadmin. Show Devices Tree>Expand CORE>Expand Generic Web Device>Click on Generic Proxy Orbiter. Under device data, look for "Listen Port". By default this is 3461.

Cheers.

I think one of the next top priorities for the app is the automatic orbiter generation. We will keep contact with los93sol and try to get that working asap...

The possibilities are endless... just off the top of my head: iphone GPS detects that your distance-from-home has shrunk from 20km to 100m, determines that you are returning home and it is 10pm (after sundown)... triggers event which turns on pathway, porch, and front vestibule lights, maybe opens your garage door.

davegravy,

the touch orbiter has no intelligence and can't trigger anything atm. This is something for another piece of software, that would benefit from running in background.

Yes currently true...but we plan to add much more 'intelligence' in future versions...we have big plans for Touch Orbiter aka RoamingOrb ;-)

Hi guys,

Just a quick note to let you know V 1.0.2 is available on app store now. There are no improvements but it does run on older iPod's with iOS 3.1.3 now. I know there are many lying around that could probably serve and be reused now :-)

Another version with many new features is currently in dev. We will keep you informed as we progress ....

It's great to finally see this app, please add my kudos to the list!

However, it doesn't seem to be quite working for me. My iPhone (3GS running iOS 4.1) works fine with the web orbiter in Safari (that is, the buttons seem to do what they are supposed to but it is slow and clunky). But the RoamingOrb app (version 1.0.2) only gets as far as the main orbiter screen and then most of the buttons don't work, the only that seem to work are lighting and floorplan and on these screens no button works so I have to kill the app and re-start it.

I even tried deleting the Web Proxy Orbiter and adding it again, but the RoamingOrb app still behaves as above.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I can try? My wife can't use any of the other orbiter interfaces I have cobbled together, so this is my best shot for keeping a happy marriage!

thanks,
Blaine

Hi everybody,

don't laugh too loud, 'cos I'm sensitive (and prolly senile ) but where the heck do i find ..

"RoamingOrb integrates into the standard "preferences" app of your iOS device. So you have to start the preferences app and search the "RoamingOrb" entry"

on a 3G  4.02 i-phone ??????

........... i've been thro every menu option i can find , and i'm beggared if i can find where to setup server port/ip address,

Go to the Settings App on your iPod/iPhone/iPad, launch it and scroll down until you see the entry for RoamingOrb...touch that entry and you will be able to config the App for your system.

Sounds like you need to do a Full-Regen of the proxy_orbiter the RoaminOrb App is configured for. Go to Wizard->Devices->Orbiters and find the Orbiter setup for your RoamingOrb App and then use the green 'Full-Regen' button just beneath its entry on that page. Let the Regen complete then re-test your RoamingOrb App.

All the best

Well if you have no RoamingOrb visible in the settings App then RoamingOrb is not installed. You need to install RoamingOrb using the App Store.

Hi andrew,

sorry for not being clear,

I've downloaded Roaming orb from i-tunes store, synced the i-phone, and "Web Orbiter" is showing on main screen, but there is no reference to RoamingOrb in (main screen)>settings .

i-phone is a 3g running iOS 4.02

ideas ?
many thanks for your patience

Web Orbiter has nothing to do with the RoamingOrb App - I assume that you have previously used the Web Orbiter on this iPhone and have saved a short cut to the main screen.

It sounds to me like you have not synced the RoamingOrb App with your iPhone properly and this is why you do not see RoamingOrb on your iPhone (make sure that RoamingOrb is not on any of the other 5 home screen on your iPhone...before doing what i describe below). If you still cannot find the App on your iPhone...then do the following;

In iTunes on your PC/Mac make sure that when you select your iPhone (click it in the left hand panel in iTunes) and you select the Apps option (displayed across the top of the window when the iPhone is selected) that the tick box next to the RoamingOrb App in the installed Apps list is ticked. If it is not then tick it and re-sync your iPhone.

Now you should find that RoamingOrb is installed on your iPhone...make sure you use the Settings App to setup the correct settings for your system.

All the best

Does anyone know if any skin looks particularly better on the iPhone 3? (lower resolution than iPhone 4, text of video names just barely readable)

Hi !

Normally this happens when you have a wrong resolution set up for your iPhone.

That means for example when you have an iPhone 4 the touches are send in 960 x 640 resolution, but if your orbiter is set to iphone 3 resolution of 480 x 320 the touches are not properly recognized.

This is of course also true for the reverse example, meaning having an iphone 3 and settings orbiter resolution to iphone 4.

Please check ...

Cheers,

Serge

Well, i have "480x320 (iPhone)" and "960x640 (iPhone 4)" in my list. Which version of lmce are you using ?

If not, try the 320 x 480 and down on the screen set the "Normal horizontal (3:4) to "PDA (4:3 vertical style)". Did never try this, but it may work ...

Hi Beeker,

The custom resolutions for iPhone4g/iPod4g & iPhone/iPod are not currently in the system as standard. In the future they will be. You can add any resolution you need by following the procedure explained on this wiki page though in the meantime; http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Custom_Display_Resolutions#Orbiter_size (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Custom_Display_Resolutions#Orbiter_size)

Uh ? I thought on a full regen all screens would be generated regardless of orientation and size ?

Why does he not have the iphone and iphone 4 in his selection ? Could an apt-get update / upgrade fix this ?

As far as I know...and i think posde is confirming this in the post above...currently these resolutons are not in the 0810 builds as standard. The iPad resolution is as it is a normal desktop resolution that has been supported for ages. Each resolution has to be added specifically... they are not autogenerated based on what you add to the device template. So currently these new resolutions need to be added manually...

Just to verify: The iPhone sizes (both) are in 810. If you don't see them, do a sqlCVS update and they should appear.

However, the UI style has nothing to do with size. Each UI has its own set of buttons and screens, i.e. PDA UI has different screens that Normal Horizontal.

Ok, then i think the easiest, and the proposed solution for Beeker is to do an sqlCVS update and then simply choose the iPhone resolution with standard horizontal UI.

I'm not sure if I set something up incorrectly (I was a little tired) but i tried setting up roaming orbiter lastnight and everything looked great... I got the orbiter connected and I could see that main screen; but I couldn't actually click on anything... I would tough the screen and the loading logo would show for a second then it would disappear but nothing else wold happen... I did notice that sometimes when I'd touch the screen the floorplan would show up or the change room menu... but then I couldn't click on anything...

am I missing some setting?  I was almost like the screen wasn't calibrated...

Check that you are using the correct port number in settings. Its important that each Touch Based Orbiter has a unique port number set.

Well yes & no. It could mean that its pointing to another port that is also used for an Orbiter and in that case you will get very weird responses indeed.

So go back over your setup at your Core... double check that you have setup your Touch Orbiter device at the core as per the steps outlined at this wiki page; http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Web_Orbiter_2.0 (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Web_Orbiter_2.0). Then double check that your iOS devices settings are correct and that the correct port No. is set.

There is also now an updated Dianemo iOS app in the Apple iOS App store - search for 'dianemo' in the App store either from your device or from iTunes. As with RoamingOrb the Dianemo App is also a free download and is compatible with LinuxMCE & Dianemo systems (Note: the secure remote access feature is only available on Dianemo systems)

Enjoy!
