Title: Easy way to update kernel for LinuxMCE 8.10
Post by: valent on June 17, 2010, 12:42:47 PM
Hi, have updated wiki for installing new kernel images, this way you can install newer kernels than 2.6.27 that is in Intrepid (8.10) repos.

In this example I installed 2.6.32.8 kernel image via Ubuntu PPA repository:
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Upgrading_the_Kernel#Installing_newer_2.6.3x_kernels_via_PPA_repository

This kernel update procedure hasn't been thoroughly tested, so please do this at your own risk. Risk should be minimal because you will still have your old kernel and boot it if this one doesn't work as expected.

Please suggest any better way to update kernel and share you experience after following these instructions.

Why should you update your kernel? Only if you have some piece of hardware that is know to have issues with 2.6.27 and older kernels.

For me the main issue is that 2.6.27 has really poor webcam support. Webcam support is much better with newer kernels.

After returning home I saw I had a hdd failure, fsck found lots of error, could it be in anyway connected with updating kernel? I can't see how, but...
After fixing issues LMCE wouldn't boot because mysql database was corrupted in the process :(

I'm doing a fresh 8.10 install right now, after that I'll update the kernel again and see what is happening...

I had HDD hardware failure, after a clean reinstall of LinuxMCE 8.10 via latest ISO image I'm back.

This procedure works for me now, after booting new kernel I tested ZWave lights and that still works as it did with older kernel. As this box is used as core and not as hybrid can't confirm if audio is working because I don't use it.

But now you know that it is safe to test out.

If you need newer kernel than 2.6.27 for 8.10 this is the easiest way to do it.

Cheers from Croatia,
Valent.

Can this method be used under 0710?

Nope, there are inctructions for 0710 on the same wiki page. I did manual kernel update year ago and that worked right away also, just follow wiki instructions.

I'll maybe do also an 0710 install and if I do that I'll have to update kernel. There must be some linux geeks on this forum that could make .deb packages for 0710 with new kernel. Linux geeks where are you hiding ;)
