Hello All,
I'm running linuxmce 810 on an eee900a (10 watt under load).
The only problem i'm having is that the 900a has no spdif out so no dolby or DTS for me.
Does anyone have any experience with external soundcards like the creative X-FI usb ?
I would only use the optical spdif interface to connect the eee900a to my digital receiver.
Greetings Rob
The only external sound card i was able to get working was the Sabrent USB-SND8 8-Channel USB 2.0 External 7.1 Sound Box
the sound blaster etc... didnt work at the time and this was a limitation of alsa and not lmce
Thanks
Mandingo

See this wiki article about using Squeezeslave & usb sound 'cards' http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Squeezeslave_on_the_core (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Squeezeslave_on_the_core). We have tried several cards now and they have all just worked...and our Cascade/Dianemo systems are built on top of 0710 too...so your mileage under 0810 should be even better I would expect.
All the best

I think the experience should be identical these days, as both, Cascade/Dianemo and LinuxMCE use a backported Alsa. LinuxMCE is currently at 1.0.23 for the drivers.
Anyone try this?

Seems to come up a lot on ebay and is the cheapest USB SPDIF capable device I have found.

Its not one we've tried...but I would suggest giving it a go.

Do you have any links for the £10 SPDIF devices you mentioned before?

Totallymaxed is it possible to provide us with the make and models of the USB cards you all have used.
And to anybody that uses USB audio devices, please post it here.
I'm having a hard time getting one that works with squeezeslave, although it might be a bug in pulseaudio and/or squeezeslave at the moment.
I will make a wiki page with USB cards table for future reference.

We purchase much of our components OEM so they will not be available from other suppliers - or not easily identifiable as such anyway. However we have tested pretty much all of the current Startech lineup and they all work for us. Now Startech OEM these to other companies (inluding us) so you will find here hardware sold under many different brands in addition to the Startech brand itself. See the Wiki page for a reference to a mid priced Startech unit.
I would suggest starting with Startech as if they do no work for you then its certainly not a problem with sound card.
All the best

Doesn't seem to say anything about SPDIF. It's also not mentioned on the Startech page for that device.

Yes...pasted the wrong one into that reply :-)
This is one we have tested successfully with spdif; http://www.startech.com/item/ICUSBAUDIO7D-USB-7-Channel-Audio-Adapter-with-SPDIF.aspx (http://www.startech.com/item/ICUSBAUDIO7D-USB-7-Channel-Audio-Adapter-with-SPDIF.aspx)
More expensive though.

It seems that there ist no driver for the usb-device loaded.
any ideas?

what version of squeezeslave are you using?
squeezeslave -V (or v) will tell you
If you have anything prior to 155 it did not show the usb device for me either, after compiling the new one it did show.
ralphy who is handling squeezeslave is up to 173 now and the latest addition he has added is the ability to set latency from command line with -y.
totallymaxed, do you all use the latest version or an older version with 0710? also do you all alsa or oss?
I have that exact same USB audio card from startech, just rebranded, i have to look at it again when i'm back home.
My list with Cmedia USB device is:

Hi,
counld it be a problem when I already use a pci Soundcard?

The USB Soundcard would be the second Soundcard to do things like this:

I don't hope so..

your pci should not be a problem, indeed the usb should show up as the 2nd card.
what does aplay -L tell you?
and again what version of squeezeslave are you using?

You can see that my USB Audio Device is showing in aplay and i also have a pci card in my core. Not sure why yours doesn't because it shows in lsusb. you have to look in dmesg or something to make sure the drivers get loaded.
You do have the latest version of squeezeslave, so that should not be the problem.
Richard
Hi,
I have seen that the USB audio card is not recognized by the system. But why is the card not recognized? Today I did a apt-get upgrade. A lot of packages where upgraded but the USB audio card is still not recognized...
Regards
I came home today and i actually have the exact same sound card as you posted above. it get's detected in my system.
Can you see in dmesg if your driver is loaded?
sound plays through this usb adapter without problem, just can't get squeezeslave to behave with it.
Richard

Bongowonge what version of alsa are you running now?
Richard
1.0.17
I have made a ticket with a possible solution, just some information I found on the net.
It has something to do that on specific kernels you need to compile with different flags enabled to prevent this from happening
ah thank you, because i do like to retain my hdmi sound, which i thought didn't work correct on 1.0.17 if my memory serves me well.
Richard
Problem with removing alsa-modules-`uname -r` is that this then means there is no support for my main soundcard! (hda nvidia)
Hi,
you are right - I have the same problem...

Johannes
Hi,
I did a fresh LinuxMCE install - before I executed the LinuxMCE installation script - I had 3 soundcards - 2 CMedia USB an 1 PCI - so it should be - then I started the LinuxMCE installation script an i only hab one soundcard - the PCI. The USB soundcards are not shown any more.

Similar issues using c-media usb device. Shows in lsusb but not aplay -l or squeezeslave -L.

Hi Barney,
Here is the output from one of our Dianemo 7.10 systems with a C-Media sound card installed and working under alsa 1.0.22. Something else must be misconfigured on your system;
root@moon70:~# cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.22.1.25.g2e20e.198.gad298.
Compiled on Feb 19 2010 for kernel 2.6.22-14-generic (SMP).

Hi Andrew,
I agree. I'm out of ideas. Going to try full reinstall with a recent snapshot.
Thanks for your help.
Barney
For what it's worth ..... just did a full clean install from recent snapshot 23736 and I am seeing the exact same dmesg errors when plugging in either of my two usb soundcards and no device added to alsa.

Hi Barney
Post your dmesg output here please.
All the best
Andrew
Hi Andrew,
See my post above, the messages are identical on my old and new build:
http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=10268.msg79043#msg79043
I also found this similar sounding (alsa/v4l/dmesg/disagrees about version of symbol) ticket raised by bongowongo. Not 100% that they are related though:
http://svn.linuxmce.org/trac.cgi/ticket/756
Thanks for looking at this.

I had also version symbol argument in dmesg, I reverted to an earlier version of ALSA
using the following command, see if it is ok in dmesg
apt-get remove alsa-modules-`uname -r`
and
reboot
This fixed the usb card for me too! Thanks!
Just need to get squeezeslave to play nice.
Barney
