ubuntu updates
« on: March 25, 2010, 12:03:46 am »
I ran an apt-get dist-upgrade today and it installed some ubuntu-security updates. unfortunately I don't remember exactly what packages.
However since then, I couldn't play any of my videofiles anymore. At first I thought my MD wasn't working properly, so I set it up again fresh....but no luck.
The core played the files, but the MD is a no go. Now I fired up my windows-box to ask here in the forum...and I got a message, that not all of my network-drives could be connected....and lo and behold: I cannot access anything anymore under /home/public/data...access denied!
So I guess something in the updates screwed up the file-permissions...so how do I get it all back to normal?

I did the upgrade today and the upgraded packages are:
Code: [Select]
The following packages will be upgraded:
  libsmbclient libwbclient0 pluto-capture-card-scripts pluto-pnp-detection pluto-std-plugins samba
  samba-common smbclient smbfs winbind
10 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Maybe trying to revert one by one and testing may isolate the problem.

got some news from irc, pugsley is the man:
apt-get install samba=2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3 samba-common=2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3  libsmbclient=2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3 libwbclient0=2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3  smbclient=2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3 smbfs=2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3
first on your core, then on the respective MDs

Did test today. On the core/hybrid i can access and play all kind of files and tv.
On my diskless MD, tv works, browsing media works, but no file play (audio or viideo).
Under kde (on MD) i can play the video and audio files.
What a f***k... the day before yesterday everything was working....

It's a permission problem.

On my MD /var/log/pluto/114_Xine_Player.log.

pw44> thats correct. It appears that the sambaupdates screwed the permissions. thats why I posted the workaround above. downgrade those packages and it will work again. I created a ticket already, so lets hope there will be a permanent solution soon

 * WARNING: This changes the default samba behaviour. For security
reasons, it is no longer possible to use wide links and UNIX
extensions at the same time. After applying this security update, wide
links will be disabled automatically as UNIX extensions are turned on
by default. If wide links are required, you may re-enable them by
adding "unix extensions = no" to the [global] section of
    the /etc/samba/smb.conf configuration file.

Apparently LinuxMCE depends on that feature, so try changing unix extensions = yes to unix extensions = no in the /etc/samba/smb.conf config file.  If that fixes it, don't forget to update the template in /usr/pluto/templates/smb.conf.template as well.

This was implemented in the template in Changeset 22877 http://svn.linuxmce.org/trac.cgi/changeset/22877.  I have not done an upgrade on my core to the latest build yet so havn't tested it...  perhaps the change is not functioning as expected?

Thanks Zaerc, your suggestion worked for me. I have previously downgraded as suggested in this thread.

I ran the latest apt-get update and apt-get upgrade (which updated samba etc) on core and then on MDs. Made the fix in /etc/samba/smb.conf and all is now working with the latest packages.

Thanks Zarec
A Linux novice but I just updated my core & MD last night and then got the problem of access denied so I followed your advice and it worked........thanks for the tip not sure why it is still happening 120 days later than this original post may be because I am using an old image I made back in Feb 2010, but still I just updated it last night.....any thoughts
