did you apt-get update and apt-get updgrade recently?  the latest MPlayer_player with vdpau support is working for me (on my corre/hybrid), on my diskless MD i'm still working to figure out how to make this work, as on this MD i have a geforce 6800 (no vdpau support).

Yes, my system is up-to-date:
Code:
linuxmce@dcerouter:~$ apt-cache policy mplayer
mplayer:
  Installed: 2:1.0-svn30383-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2:1.0-svn30383-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 2:1.0-svn30383-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://www.avenard.org intrepid/release Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Regarding your problem. You can try Broadcom Crystal HD - http://www.broadcom.com/support/crystal_hd/
