yes, without going through LinuxMCE. We cannot distinguish the both paddles, that is a limitation from the protocol. You can do this with an EnOcean switch.

Is this then also the "issue" with the smoke detectors?
I don't have one yet, so I cannot tell. They use some special features to wakeup battery powered sleeping devices. In the past they were not listening to save battery power. The new Zensornet (iirc) features will make sure that all smoke detectors will alarm when one sets off.
To gain some more knowledge as youre the expert here, is this something that is launched in the new z-wave/zensys protocoll?
what do you mean by new? The latest version I've looked at was 5.x
