hope for blu-ray afterall..
« on: January 08, 2010, 12:10:49 am »
I just started looking into MakeMKV for blu-ray support.  My linux desktop is currently doing a dist-upgrade.  Once it's done and I have time I'm going to see what I can come up with.  At the moment it appears MakeMKV is able to stream blu-ray, including BD+, to a .mkv file or via network to a player capable of playing network streams (ie VLC, I believe mplayer, others).  One issue is there does not appear to be a CLI, only a gui interface, but when I get a chance to install it I'll look.

There´s a lot of talk about bluray on mplayer and xine irc channels.
Afaik the latest mplayer devel release even support playback of encrypted blueray.

As you say makemv is another nice app. Lot´s of talk about that too on irc.
As Matroska containers nowadays support chapters and subtitles in it´s container
makemkv can rip a dvd, blueray in a good way.

Say that again, mplayer dev release supports playback of encrypted blu-ray?  Is there a link to more info on this?

FWIW, MakeMKV thusfar is not working for me.  I got it installed, but I'm unable to rip the one and only blu-ray dvd I have.

Yes. Have to do some more research to find out if it is something that is really working. Lots of discussion is re à new lib, libblueray which seem to play à major role.
I Will see what i can dig up.

Fantastic news indeed.  If the decrypting can be done via library and just leave mplayer or whatever else to deal with playing then LMCE should be able to support seamless blu-ray support just like dvds.

the progress seems a bit spotty, and the libbluray project seems to have moved tracs but can't see where. it seems clear that the really hard work is going to be getting the JVM working to provide the menus, almost nothing at all has been done on that yet, but the decryption side seems pretty close, so exciting nonetheless!

what about this version of mplayer:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1327197

here:

Quote
I'm using mplayer with a little patch and a library for bluray playback on my HTPC.

You just nedd to install the library and apply the patch to latest mplayer source.

Then you can playback blurays with
mplayer bluray://playlist:chapter//mountPath
playlist ans chapters are optional parameters.

e.g.: mplayer bluray:///media/cdrom0

more informations are in the readme file.

Supports AACS until mkb 10, (backwards and forwards) seeking and movies, which are splitted over more than one file.

Needs openssl 0.9.8 to be installed!

If you have any questions just ask.

Video lan is getting very close to a lib.
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=95937
If one of our super uber coders can look into this that would be nice. Just a look, I'm not expecting any work yet.
I know that LMCE has a VLC option instead of xine.
Is this something we can look forward to?
As for the more questionable stuff, can we enable most of what is able to be inabled with out crossing the line and have the user complete the rest on their own. Like how dvdcss is done now.

LMCE cannot offer OOTB support for bluray.

If you can make yours work, so be it... but it cannot be implemented or supported... and frankly... it should not even be discussed in forum.

I am not affiliated with LMCE in any official capacity. Just telling it like it is. This is verboten.
I never quit... I just ping out.

What should never be discussed in the forum?

Clearly the interest in having blueray ripping/decryption/playback support is solely for those of us who make our own HD family home videos, encrypt+burn them to bluray, and need a means to play them back.

It draws unwanted attention... and it has been stated several times that we can't openly support it. It is just too contentious an issue.

Again... it is not my position to speak for lmce... but a quick forum search will draw heaps of threads where the position is explained.
I never quit... I just ping out.

Sorry but this makes no sense to me. If you say LMCE does not and will not support blu-ray it is even drawing more attention. Since then you force people who want to play HD to download the contents (if they want to stick to lmce as the playback device). And anno 2012 if you install lmce you are using state of the art home solution you are not gonna settle for SD.

Agree 100% except that LMCE seems to want to shift the risk to the end user - whether the user chooses to download their HD content, or come up with their own solution for playing encrypted bluray.

As far as I can tell, bluray has nearly been a complete flop, the future is in streamed and/or downloaded media, and internet bandwidth is only going up. I don't like giving the MAFIAA a victory as much as the next guy, but this is one battle I'd be willing to give in on for the sake of the war at large.

Besides, if someone comes up with a solution for patching in bluray support to the project, and documented it on their own website, it's unlikely that the LMCE team would or could do much about it.
