Hello all,
I recently setup a simple Linux MCE system and it is great. The one thing that I have seen in the short time of looking around the forums is people wanting iPhone and Android orbiters. I have seen many topics started but nothing about where anyone is at, if they are still working on it, need any help, or what. I have done some simple android apps for my self in the past running on my Verizon droid. I would like to help or start this project. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I have seen some threads about a java DCE and I think that is where I am going to get started.

Thanks
Josh

Thanks I was looking mostly in the development post because when I fist looked at that thread it was more about the price. I am going to look through that thread and see what I can do. It looks like I might get snowed in for a day or two and have a lot of time to look at this.

Thanks

I would be happy to co-operate with anyone on an android device!

I think it's worth pointing out that I've heard talk the orbiter architecture is going to be rebuilt (possibly from scratch) once 8.10 is released.

It might not be the best time to invest time in coding up an orbiter on android until the orbiter architecture is decided.

Cheers,

David.

Any redesign and reimplementation of orbiter is going to take a looooong time.  I don't think it would be a waste to have an Android Orbiter - at least a basic one - before that happens to cover us for the mean time.  It would attract attention to the project, at the very least, and it would be a very useful feature.  Not to mention the "wow factor" of being able to control your house with a fairly famous phone...

I'm quite interested in seeing some actual prototype implementations.  I'd love to get into it myself, but I have other (not-open-source) projects that need to be finished before I can do that - they're already several months overdue, of course, so pressure is high there...

Here is a decent article on writing "C" code for Android:

zenPad is another good reason to have Android Orbiter - 5", 800x480, just $155!

For the record... while many are looking into an android specific solution... the web orbiter works on it. I strongly recommend using xscope as the browser (free, in marketplace). The pinch and zoom changes everything. You can resize with p&z and flick it into the upper left corner and it will stay that size until you change screens (or tap some buttons). Keyboard works, as does clickpad. Also recommend changing the resolution in orbiter wizard in web admin so it only goes big if you zoom.

It is an inelegant solution, but a fully functional one.
