Download for 710
« on: November 04, 2009, 12:12:44 am »
I noticed that the download on the webpage is for the 810 beta.  I know we're all excited about it, I've been playing with it too.  However, it is beta and I know we've all run into so semi-show stopping bugs... well for the un-initiated that is.  We should probably get a link up there for the 710 stable version.  Just a thought.

Well that might have been a reasonable idea 9 months back but I cant see it has much going for it now - the LinuxMCE-0710 release never received any updates/fixes or changes after release so it would be a challenge to use it without some pretty major problems. The LinuxMCE-0810 alpha/beta's are available now but your right these are still unstable - thats why their not released!

Our Cascade & Dianemo products are stable production systems and are based on LinuxMCE-0710 - but we importantly we have fixed many bugs and backported much of the major code changes that have been added for the LinuxMCE-0810 release too (we also contribute code to the 0810 codebase too). So although our base was 0710 we have continued to build on that version since its release for stability. Cascade & Dianemo are available if your looking for pre-built systems - look at the the url to the forum thread in the footer to this message below for more info on that.

All the best

I don't totally disagree.  However, The download on the frontpage (http://www.linuxmce.org/index.php/download) only has 810.  A newbie is not going to have a good experience out of the box with the 810 release.  Sure there are bugs in 710, but the major functionality works without any tweaking.  This is something that is important for growth of the community, in my opinion.

I know you know your stuff Andrew but FWIW - I wasn't able to get 0810 Beta to work and have gone back to 0710. I don't have any "major" problems - just a few minor ones. Overall very stable despite no updates...I think I'd agree with Enigmus. If i didn't have the 0710 DVD install, I wouldn't be using LinuxMCE currently ;D

Hi wombiroller,

Well I never said that 0710 was unusable at all...its what we started with when we first launched Dianemo - so I agree it will work. However there are literally 100's of bug fixes and 50+ enhancements we have backported & added to 0710 and these do make a tremendous difference in use in terms of stability and functionality too.

So I guess as long as forum members accept 0710 for what it is then making it available again is possibly reasonable.

All the best
