64 Bit Version of MCE?
« on: October 26, 2009, 05:19:40 pm »
Is there an X86_64 Bit version of Linux MCE or am I limited to an 386 processor?

The Reason I'm asking is I'm about to build an HTPC(Home Theater Personal Computer) and need to know what processor and motherboard I will need to use. I'm a big fan of AMD Phenom 2 chips, but If I can't use the 64bit technology I would be ok with going with dual-core chip of some kind built on the 386 architecture.

As I know there is no advantage 64bit LinuxMCE system over 32bit. So, I don't think that developers will support both just to expand the range of the processors :)

BTW, think about noise when you'll choose the processor. The strong one needs more cooling which makes a noise. The possible solution is using GPU for video decoding. nVidia Ion, for example. You may assemble absolutely quiet HTPC based on dual core Atom and GeForce 9400  with VDPAU support.

There is an AMD 64 specific build for 710, but it was quirky at times.  Do some searching if you're really curious.  I started with the 64bit, then reinstalled the 32bit on my dual core AMD 64 based server and have been happy.  No idea if a 64bit version of 810 will be out, but since there is very little performance difference with LinuxMCE it shouldn't really matter.

Not sure if you realize it or not, you can install and run 32bit linux on an AMD Phenom 2 just fine.

As nite_man suggests, check out the nVidia ION based systems for your media directors (the HTPC client at your TVs).  The only drawback at the moment is they apparently are not powerful enough for the new HULU integration (flash based).  However, things look promising for this as well:  http://www.nvidia.com/object/io_1254722910215.html

Also - you may purchase a 64-bit chip and run a 32-bit OS if you choose.
