Not if Archos has anything to say about it... They are worse leaches of of FOSS GNU/Linux than TomTom or Tivo are...

I bought two Archos 604Wifis, expecting an experience similar to the PMA430, but what I got was a hardware locked device. That said, I never updated the firmware to the latest, so my 604s could theoretically use the html exploit to give me a root shell and (temporarily until next boot) install apps...

You'll be better off spending your hard earned dough on a brand spanky new Nokia N900... It uses the new Maemo 5 (the next generation of Maemo), is supposedly not locked, and has wifi, bluetooth and 3G... and can be a phone. Plus orbiter software has already been ported to Maemo. Probably just needs a re-compile to support version 5...

Agree with JaseP.

I bought Archos 705 thinking that it'll make an excellent orbiter. It would, if the operating system were open but it's not. I had to buy Opera separately for it -- version that crashes soo often.

N810 works just fine, also as a multipurpose device. For an in-wall orbiter, the screen just should be bigger. Wait, did someone say WebDT...

I didn't realise that. I saw Android and thought it has to be reasonably open... Yeah the N810 screen is a bit small, WEBDT perfect size but the one I have has a shitty battery life and no docking station. Plus I have to use WEP which makes me paranoid (live in a busy area)...

I see that people isn't very fond of Archos tablets. But as these post is a bit old, i would like to know if people have some new experience on this subject? I'm especially thinking of the Archos 7 Home tablet. http://www.archos.com/products/ht/archos_7/
Would it work as an orbiter?

Just use the re-written (from the ground up) Web Orbiter (in svn but not in builds yet...at least i dont think it is) create a screen resolution to suit your device screen size and your done. Any device with a Web browser that can run javascript should work fine. New Orbiter tested on Chrome 6.0.437.3 dev, FireFox 3.6 and current iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad Safari (pre OS4 release).

All the best
