Cheap MD for Audio only
« on: July 22, 2009, 09:02:25 pm »
I am thinking about deplying LinuxMCE at home but are thinking about the possibilites to have MP3s available in every room. That would require a cheap MD that is not connected to any screen, perhaps even without any buttons.

Does anyone know about any suitable hardware for this usecase?
Kind of the functionality of Squeezebox but I dont like the price tag of those units.

If / when I got the system up I will try to contribute to the development, but first thing first and get a system up and running.

I am using the hauppauge MVP as squeezebox replacements.
You can connect some powered speakers or it has a spdif
currently its not plug and play (working on that though).

Before getting one of these check the forums- if I remember correctly only some revisions are compatible without an additional pxe server.

I have the newer ones (h3) that require additional tftp server. I have the required files and scripts to have it boot from lmce. been doing so for over a yr.

but I do want to make it pnp

How can you tell which version the MVP is?

Can you see the device in your media floorplans or are you controlling it some other way?  (Im interested in using a couple of these are they are about half the price of the squeezebox).

Like others, I will be using something like a squeezebox when it comes time for this.  I'm not familiar with the Hauppauge MVP, but until my basement is finished I'm not buying anything other than possibly drive space.  Plenty of time to figure out options, but audio only areas will have devices designed for audio.

Mine says (H4) right on the bottom of the unit.  In an effort to not hijack this thread I requested on another for the files to do this...
