DVDCSS library issue
« on: June 23, 2009, 01:32:23 pm »
Hi All,

I am trying to connect my USB DVD drive to my machine that runs LMCE. Kubuntu and LMCE have been installed using CD ROM. Now, when I try to plug in an external USB DVD drive, LMCE tells me that "DVDCSS library is not installed" and can't play the DVD.

Is this a driver issue? Is there a way to install DVD driver to Kubuntu/LMCE?

Thanks,

is this 0810?
if so you need to install the libdvdcss2 package using apt.

You should be able to install these from the "Add Software" screen on the Orbiter.
Or if that fails you can do it from a terminal

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 w32codecs

i dont use orbiter yet ,i'm just testing it ,the problem is that one DVD movie is working great ,another one it is starting but after few minutes it is showing that DVDcss library is missing.
I've tried from terminal it installed but the same thing happened when i've started the video.

Welcome to the wonderful world of playback protection. Unfortunately, there is an increasing number of DVDs which CAN'T be read by libdvdcss.

Details can be found, as always, in the wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD/DVD_copy_protection

you can try to contact your local government representatives and let them know how these anti-copy measures are interfering with your free use rights, but nothing is likely to change.
otherwise, you can use a windows machine with ripping software to copy it to your linuxmce share.

Most people probably know this but I didn't see it in this thread. In a terminal...

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras

system:
ASUS P5N7A-VM
integrated GeForce 9300
E5200 processor
Fusion 5 lite HDTV card
2G RAM
SYBA SY-PCI15001 6-port serial card
Denon AVR 3805
LG 42" Plasma
Gyration GYR3101
Cisco SPA3102 analog telephone adapter
Cisco 7971G IP phone/orbiter

Ummm, just swapped out my slot-loading DVD-drive for another full size one I had lying about and the same DVD that wouldn't play now plays fine.
Go figure! more digging required but may not necessarily be libdvdcss issue.

Just found https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs
They are talking about libdvdread3, whats the difference with libdvdcss2 and do we need it?
Would it help to install it as discribed in the link above or will it break stuff?

The problem is that the dvd is ripped on external hard drive ,it is not protected.
And to the one that said there is some new update ,please try it and tell us what happens.
