DVD playback issues

I recently installed linuxmce 8.10 and the restricted software package. I can play DVDs that I've previously burned, but when I put in a normal DVD I see the "Disk detected in drive" screen and it keeps popping up even if I close out of the screen. I was able to play normal DVDs if I went to the KDE desktop and played them with xine there. Anyone have any clues why it's doing this?

Did you install libdvdcss?

If you didn't you might also want to install w32codecs.

Aren't those included in the restricted software package? Also, I can play normal DVDs while in KDE

The restricted package is to do with video drivers for the nvidia/ati cards (please correct me if I'm wrong).

If you remember when you installed 710 when you were doing the media wizard you could optional download 2 drivers for cisco? phones, CSS DVD and w32/64 codecs.

libdvdcss is for accessing and unscrambling DVDs encrypted with the CSS system. It is part of the VideoLAN project and is used by VLC and all other open source DVD players such as Ogle, xine-based players and MPlayer.

w32codecs is a package of codecs needed to play multiple formats, notably DivX, MP3's, etc.

The last time I downloaded and installed 810 these choices had not been populated yet in the add software section.

sorry, didn't mean to be confusing. I meant the restricted extras mentioned here: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Restricted_Software_Installation_Guide. I have libdvdcss and w32codecs installed. It still keeps getting stuck in the "Disk detected in drive" screen.

What movie(s) are we talking about here?
Is it all original movies or does it happen with burned ones too?

For example I have a James Bond, casion royale what won´t play but that is because of stupid copy protection schemes that is supposed to prohibit it from being ripped and played in a computer.

As far as I've tested it happens with all original DVDs, but not with any burned DVDs. I've only tried 2 original discs so far, Kiss of the Dragon and Babylon AD. I'm pretty sure Kiss of the Dragon doesn't have any elaborate copy protection like Casino Royale.

Don't know if this would be a solution but ...

sudo apt-get install regionset

In a console as root type regionset.

If you get an error it's not installed.

Please be aware that most drives limit you to about 5 changes (regionset should tell you how many you have left - just issue the command as root).

If you plan to watch foreign DVDs, it would be best to have a secondary external DVD drive, and have it set to a different region to the 'main' DVD in your machine.

To set or change your DVD drives region, put any disc into your drive, and in a console as root type regionset.

Then simply select the relevant region code.

Here is the list of region codes and which countries they cover:

RC1 = North America (USA and Canada)
RC2 = Europe, Middle East, South Africa and Japan
RC3 = Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Korea
RC4 = Latin America, Australia, New Zealand
RC5 = Former Soviet Union (Russia, Ukraine, etc.), rest of Africa, India
RC6 = China

The copy protection scheme varies depending in which area of the world it is bought too. It seems.
Mine is from sweden and I know people that have bought the same movie in germany and those discs do not have the same kind of protection.

Setting the region didn't change anything. I think linuxmce just doesn't like my DVD drive(it works fine in KDE). It's a plextor px-716a. I had DVDs playing with an older generic drive, but the rips were too slow and it had problems reading disks that had shinny surfaces on both sides of the disk. I think it's about time I got a new drive, any suggestions?

Hi,

I wouldn't rush out and get a new drive just yet.

If the drive works in KDE it should work in LMCE.

Wait until Beta comes out.  It just might be a glitch of some sort.
