Dumb-ass question of the day. 8.10 status.

Hi folks,

The further I get into this whole thing the more I get the feeling I need to use 810 Alpha. I have limited time, however and WAF to consider. So I can't spend hours (days) trying to get 810 working if there is nothing to show for it at the end.

I know that using an Alpha version is going to be risky (even a beta version can have problems) but if 710 doesn't do the job, I have three choices:

1) Stick with 710 and live without a lot of stuff I really want / need.
2) Use 810 and live with any "idiosyncrasies".
3) Wait until 810 is released.

Obviously, 1 is the safe bet, but I'd like to make an informed decision. Where can I find a list of what is currently working in 810 and what is being worked on? If the core (for me) stuff is now finished and work has moved on elsewhere then 2 becomes an option. Also, (and I know people keep asking this) do we have ANY sort of timescale for 810 beta / release? Are we talking days? Weeks? Months? (Years?  )

I KNOW you guys doing the development are all voluntary and work very hard to produce this system. I'm not trying to rush you or put pressure on, just get a feel for where you are at so I can make an informed choice

Well the first beta release is ready but we are working on a simpler/quicker installation procedure before releasing it. CHT are working on that now... I hope we get this ready & tested this week so that we can get the beta out there for you all to use.

So far, for me, 810 alpha rocks (knock on wood).

I was a bit worried about the time investment at first, not knowing if a component I add one day will disappear the next.

But, so far, so good.

I love this project  .

Any chance you could document your setup, either here or on the Wiki? Not just the hardware you used, but also the bits you have installed and use successfully?

Anyway, what I want to find out is if I can get hold of the UNRAID driver and put it on Kubuntu and run it directly on my core. I'd rather not have two boxes running (core and NAS) if I can do it with one.

Also, I have been offered some HP SAS drives (half a dozen 72Gb and about 4 146Gb. Has anyone got any experience of putting together a DIY disk pack with such drives? Is the interface standard? How do you mount them in an enclosure? Is it worth the effort?

Hmmm...you are going down a very rocky if not impassable road if you think you can just extract a 'driver' from UNraid and then roll it into Kubuntu. Then in addition you have the problem that the driver is binary only... and well a whole bunch of other gotchas. We use it very successfully as the basis for several of our NAS products...it works superbly as it was designed to work...just go with the flow on UNraid is my strong suggestion (you already have a big enough hill to climb ;-) )
