Who maintains the wiki software?

Hi,

I'm not sure where in the forums it was, but I seem to recall someone suggesting it would be cool to have a map showing where all the MCE setups are located, so you could see who is nearby in case you want to contact for mutual support or even set up a user's group.

Anyhow, I've been doing some research and it would seem the easiest way to do this is to add an extension to the wiki software. This would then provide additional tags which people could put into their User Setups page and cause their location to show on a map.

To add the extension, however, you need to be on the web server

Whoever currently manages the wiki server should have a look at:-
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Semantic_Google_Maps which is, I think, the basic extension needed.

Seriously, you wouldn't have to put in an exact location, but I think it would be helpful to know how many systems there are in various areas of the world. If someone offers advice concerning TV parameters, for example, it would be handy to know if they are likely to know anything about your region. Similarly, it would be interesting to see if it is worth trying to set up a user group or if the nearest system to yours is 2 countries away!

Nobody is saying you would have to fill it in, but the option should be there. Like everything else Linux, it;s all about choice and we currently can't choose to do this

I'd love to be able to see if there was anyone nearby with a LinuxMCE setup.

we have no intentions of adding plugins to mediawiki that are not shipped by default.

If you really wanted something like this, there is nothing stopping you from setting up a google maps thing and asking people tp put their info on it. I think it is important that something like this be completely voluntary, as per the concern above.

You are correct, however why re-invent the wheel? What the plugin does is to support a tag in the other pages to specify location. Any such tags are summarised on a single google-maps page.

Thus, anyone who doesn't want to partake simply doesn't put the tag there.

Unfortunately, that type of functionality required server-side processing, so therefore a plugin is required. Hari doesn't seem keen, however so it looks like a non-starter. I might have a go at a community page that people can add their details too - if there's enough interest and demand, maybe Hari can be persuaded, however I suspect that anything that takes the Devs away from MCE development will be met, quite rightly, with resistance. This is about MCE, after all, not wiki development!
