New wiki entry (my first) - nothing cosmic though

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Problem-accessing-webadmin

It caught me out when playing with wifi and NIC setup on my MCE machine.  It should be obvious but you know what its like when your so close to a setup of a new system you sometimes miss the simple things!

Hi!

I just checked your entry and I'm a little confused. Are you saying that your MCE system isn't your DHCP server, or that it isn't on 192.168.80.1? As far as I know, that is unsupported and likely to cause some of the Dev's to wask their hands of you and tell you to stop over-thinking it  ;D

MCE NEEDS to be the DHCP server as that is how it works out what the various devices are and keeps an internal record of what is there.

Changing it's address, I can't think of a reason not to do this (I'm guessing someone will come up with one) but I also can't think of a reason why you want want to either! It's unlikely that your home will be large enough to require more devices than can be accommodated on a Class-C network (BIG house with more than 252 devices!!!!) and 192.168.80.0 is not likely to interfere with your external network either (most routers that I've seen use 192.168.1.0)

Just my 10 Eurocents
Paul

My mce is now the dhcp master for its internal network.  The issue came up as i was trying to use wifi for external connection.  When this failed i swapped the network cards over in webadmin and connected mce to my router.  This worked a treat, flickr images and network connectivity was fine.  I had forgotten to switch off dhcp on my router and mce's ip address changed because of it.  This kept me out of webadmin until i worked out what had gone on.

I understand its unsupported like that, and i have sinced swapped back to the supported setup.  MCE did however work fine in the configuration above, so it might help someone else was my thinking.

Fair enough!

I was just a little concerned that documenting unrecommended / unsupported configurations on the wiki, without a lot of disclaimers, was likely to offend some of the purists here and subject you to a flame war  ;D
