810 Alpha 7 No DVD playback sound
« on: June 08, 2009, 02:05:24 am »
Hi

I have been banging my head on this.
First my specs;
Asus M3N-H/HDMI,
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.0 GHz
LinuxMCE 810 Alpha 7
Kernel 2.6.28-11
alsa 1.1.20
SPDIF sound output.

Now I have installed the system all works good after the kernel and alsa upgrade. I have sound on my Movies and Music. But on my DVD playback I have nothing..
the video goes but not a beep out if the sound..
So on another disk I installed mythbuntu and tested the same hardware, to make sure it works. and what you know with kernel 2.6.28 and alsa 1.1.20 over SPDIF all works like it should..

I don't know where to start looking.

My conclusion I can make..
1) the Hardware work
2) kernel 2.6.28 with the alsa 1.1.20 work..

Can some one help me to try and fine out how I can fix this..

Thanks
Chris

Hi,

I'm just wondering...

Did you install libdvdcss and w32codecs?

Had pretty the same issue, never solved it... because I (I think) had to change my audio receiver, so I'm using regular AUX unfortunately. Music, avi files etc. played great... but not DVD's...

Be sure, it is not your receiver...

Hi guy

thanks for your reply

I have tried to install libdvdcss and w32codecs with no luck..

I have also tested my receiver, as I said I have booted up in another install on that same system, same sound config and it worked fine.
So I know my hardware work.
This is a weird one, as it does not work in lmce, but in mythbuntu it work fine..

Hi,

Should just be apt-get install libdvdcss - (might need 2 or 3 at the end but I don't think so).

What was your error response and were you logged in as root when you tried?

I have now reinstalled my system a few time and it still does not work..
I have tested it again on Mythbuntu and it work with no problems
I have this time not updated the kernel or the alsa driver..
Any one has any indication what this may be or where I can start looking...
Thanks

What sound receiver do you have (the one that receives signal from the spdif)?

type alsamixer and look for your IEC958 .. there could be more than one, this is the SPDIF passthru device, and it is often muted, which will cause problems like this... you should be able just to hit 'm' to unmute it, if this is the problem. Then exit alsamixer, and test again.

Failing that, paste your /etc/asound.conf file here, so we can check if the SPDIF is setup correctly.

Hi

Yes I am using SPDIF out put..
I have un-muted all my IEC958 devices
Here is my asound.conf file
pcm_slave.convert48k {
   pcm "spdif"
   rate 48000
}

pcm.spdif_playback {
   type plug
   slave convert48k
}

pcm.asym_spdif {
   type asym
   playback.pcm "spdif_playback"
   capture.pcm "plughw:0"
}

pcm.asym_analog {
   type asym
   playback.pcm "plug:dmix"
   capture.pcm "plughw:0"
}
pcm.!default asym_spdif

This is weird it is just not working in lmce.

Your file looks the same as mine.... and mine works fine (0710 tho and earlier ALSA)

There is another alsa config file under the user home folder ... doesn't exist on my installation, but maybe it does on yours, can't remember exactly what it is called, something like /home/linuxmce/.soundrc check for that as well.

Does sound work if you go to KDE Desktop from LMCE? Apparently each application (inc LMCE) reads these ALSA conf files as the application starts up, so it can easily vary from app to app... which is why I am wondering if your KDE desktop apps can play sound...

Collin, is it possible, the receiver doesn't support the format of the signal from spdif??

Had strange experience with my Kenwood receiver - sound under KDE, no sound from DVD's under LMCE. Then changed receiver to Onkyo, works great...  :-\

Naturally! If the receiver doesn't decode DTS (say) and the DVD is sending a DTS stream, then it won't work or will generate horrible noise. However, I'm assuming that it was the same DVD used for testing under Mythbuntu... it would be worthwhile ensuring that the same audio track is being used in both tests as often DVDs have both DTS and DD or some other codec, and Mythbuntu may have been using one codec (that happens to work with that receiver) and LMCE using another that does not... but it seems unlikely, on balance

hi Guys

Ok I have not got a linuxmce folder under home. So I when an look in every one I had if there was one. And there is nothing..

Now relating to the media. I am using the same DVD and DVD-Rom in both lmce and Mythbuntu. and link I said it works in Mythbuntu. So I am ruling out my sound system and the DVD-Rom.
My sound works fine it KDE and lmce if I use a move on my disk.. but DVD does not work in lmce or KDE no matter what application I use in  KDE.

Let me know if you guys need any more info..
Chris

Hi Guys

Ok update
I have been banging my head on this one for a few months now..
So last week I got a movie with a53 audio codec and it also did not work.. Did a search and saw that this is the same codec that is used for AC3 passthrough.
So I went into webmin and un-tick the AC3 passthrough.
So what you know the sound tarted working. So now I got stereo sound but my digital does not work.
So I have to say this is one step better at least I can use my DVD rom now..
I think this AC3 is broken for my system.. as I said I got it working with digital on mythbuntu 8.10 and 9.04 with no problem..
