[0710] Bad performance with nVidia GeForce 8300 on 1080p
« on: January 20, 2009, 09:41:59 am »
Hi,

Finally I assembled my new hybrid core. I installed the the latest nVidia drviers (180.22). The core is connected to TV via HDMI cable. The resolution is 1080p/60GHz on the alpha blended UI2.

I found that even screen saver shows photos with short time freezing which happens periodically. The same issue with playback video (standard or HD). The processor is loaded on 30% maximum. Also I didn't see any  peaks there.

Any suggestion how to improve GE 8300 performance?

TIA

Sure, just download the source of the drivers and... oh wait you said nvidia eh?

(Sorry I know that doesn't help, but there isn't much we can do about their shitty drivers, and you probably know more about tweaking them then I do.)

I supposed that installation of nVidia drivers should be enough to get a good performance on 1080p. But it isn't true :) Will dig it more tonight. Probably I should run nVidia config utility in KDE and set some options.

I'd lose the alpha blending. Use overlay UI and the video performance will improve noticebly

Thanks, Itsik. Will try it as well. Especially as the alpha blending is not a top priority :)

Have you tried the suggestions in this wiki?
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Nvidia_Card_Tweaks_For_Better_MythTV_and_UI_Performance

Works for me, but Alpha Blending still has some tearing. I us the Overlay UI.

I also have set the "Hardware Acceleration" in webadmin to "OpenGL", and the "Deinterlace Quality" to "High".

I am now using this driver:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_180.22.html

I had to manually remove the legacy drivers as described in point 5. in the Nvidia section in this wiki:

Thanks a lot! Disabling alpha blending solved problem. Also link to the wiki article http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Nvidia_Card_Tweaks_For_Better_MythTV_and_UI_Performance is very useful!
