gigabyte MoBo with Nvidia 7800 chipset for HYbrid
« on: November 17, 2008, 05:47:06 pm »
I am looking at setting up a hybrid and I see that gigabyte MoBo's (eg GA-M750SLI-DS4) have the Nvidia  chipset for onboard.  Is this good enough to do the UI2 and output graphics to my Plasma?  Or do I need to get a Geforce graphics card?  Or do I not understand the whole Nvidia chipset nit properly?

I have a stand-alone nvidia 7200 card, so your 7xxx chipset should work. And I use UI2 Alpha Blended (Transparent Masking).

You should be ok. Best I can say is try it, and if it works, add it to the wiki for the group.

Best of Luck, Welcome, and Regards,

Thanks.

Will this onboard graphics be enough to do the output to my plasma or CRT TV do you think?

Hello,
Just curious, what 1080p media do you have?  I can only think of blu-ray disk, or some games on game consoles output 1080p.  But this would not be going through Linux MCE setup.  Where can one get 1080p media material to play on a linuxMCE setup?

Thanks

There are many movie trailers available at 1080p most are at fairly low bit rate.
So they do not tax the system that bad. There are some high bit rate BBC recordings and samples in the wild.
My system plays all but the highest bit rate stuff without issue.  Planning to try with AMD 5600 soon vs my 4400. So will see if i can get the high bit rate stuff to play without stutter.

When you configure a MD  or Hybrid to  say 1080P you are setting the display resolution. So even if you play SD content on that screen the MD upscales it to 1080P

Because we now have the prospect in the not too distant future of the new nVidia (and ATI) API's for accessing the mpeg2/h.264 acceleration hardware in some GPU's for HD playback I would suggest choosing a graphics card or motherboard that has the appropriate hardware. Otherwise you will not be able to take advantage of this performance enhancement when we integrate it.

My company is now only building HD systems with suitable nVidia GPU's so that our customers can take advantage of this upgrade when it becomes available.

This means that if you want to do the same you should choose GPU from the nVidia 8nnn & 9nnn series.

See here for details; http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=6653.0

A motherbaord that we like and have tested under LinuxMCE-0710 successfully is the ASUS P5N7A-VM http://www.motherboards.org/reviews/motherboards/1827_3.html. This motherboard works great and has excellent features, VGA, DVI & HDMI, S/PDIF, Gigabit NIC etc etc

All the best

Takeing your comments into account i was thinking of using either a Gigabyte MoBo with AMD2+ socket and a Dual Core 3100.
MoBo wise would you recommend a NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI or NVIDIA GeForce 8200 chipset.
I am trying to future proof my Hybrid a little, but in the end once I get my head around the networking thing the hybrid will run our home plamsa and network to everything else.
The AMD and Gigabyte things is just a personal preference, but I am willing to change for a better deal, including less pain on the setup side of things.

I am looking at setting up a Hybrid and I have a huge amount of home video (read 3TB at last count, yes I know I am a little carmera happy with my three kids)  So number of HDD that I can plug onboard is a bit of a thing here.  The more the better.  I am after a full size MoBo with at least 6 HDD ports (prefer 8 though).

As always the money thing is a little difficult so if I can future proof a little, keep the complexity down (Im a newbie), and ballance that all with the low budget.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Chad

Seriously, you should be considering not having your media inside your core at all. Buy a scalable NAS solution. This makes it cheaper to continue scaling up and out than doing it internally. It also then separates your LMCE control functionality from your data/media so that you can rebuild, upgrade, modify your system whenever you like without even endangering your media.

Well the 8200 GPU should be fine from the point of view of the taking advantage of the forth coming support for the new hardware acceleration API from nVidia. We have tested 8200 motherboards here in the past (but the ones we tested are now out of production) and they worked fine graphically... but it has to be said that even two seemingly very similar motherboards can actually perform very differently. Look on the Wiki on the hardware section under motherboards and choose one that has been tested and works is recommendation. I have now added the ASUS I mentioned earlier in this thread to the Wiki http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/ASUS_P5N7A-VM

Well I just bought an ABIT AN-M2HD, I wish I'd have seen this before now, I'd have bought the ASUS you mentioned.  Do you think the ABIT AN-M2HD motherboard will work as a hybrid MB?

This motherboard looks to be suitable based on a quick look at its spec... but as I have said here earlier in this thread you cannot be certain until you actually test the board I'm afraid (we have not tested this motherboard and it is now out of production)

that mobo works fine. btw the SPDIF and HDMI connectors are too close together to connect both at the same time. If you need to, your SPDIF cable header is basically a big chunk of plastic that does nothing, so take a sharp knife and slice of several mm until both fit in together. In fact you can slice off a little bit of the HDMI cable header, too - just be careful as they have shielding not far beneath...
