He's just talking about assigning the normal attributes to your video media just like you do with audio. Then you can use the Performer/Title/etc Sorts in the UI - only difference is the tags are not embedded, they are stored in the id3 files (and the database of course!)

The only limitations with Thom's suggestion are 1) that the Sorts kind of lend themselves more to audio, as there are no options for "Episode" or "Series", and 2) it really doesn't work well at all for large numbers of TV series.

I think I have read posts a long time ago about point one, can't remember if it was something you could add to (like you can with genres for instance). And Thom has already acknowledged that some intelligence around TV series, etc would be a good thing.... so fingers crossed!

I mean, as in, going into Media Files Sync, and going through all your files, and adding all the relevant attributes, and making sure that media subtype and media format are set correctly.
