Unfortunately I don't have one of those chipsets so I can't tell you what exactly needs to be done. But it's likely that you will have to modify the
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file, and maybe even download and install the latest intel drivers. Maybe somebody using these chipsets can give you some more specific pointers.

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Display_Drivers for some (general) instructions on editing the xorg.conf file. I guess the intel-specific section should be expanded a bit, as that seems somewhat inacurate considering your experience.
The easiest/quickest way to get going right now, would probably be to set the driver to "vesa" and use UI1 for the time being until you have everything setup.
