Failed DVD installation amd64 rc-1 0710
« on: April 27, 2008, 01:21:19 pm »
Total noob to Linux, wanting to move away from M$.

Tried installing using the DVD and get the following error msg

gzip:stdin: invalid compressed data--format violated
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

This is happening on the clean install option just after it says

Copying DVD to HDD
Extracting archive (this will take about ten minutes)

Have tried the CD install before the dvd and it too craps itself with the live cd iso.

From what I've found out, could it possibly be a corrupt dvd iso I downloaded from the wiki site ?

Any help appreciated
thanks Corey

My first thought would be a corrupt dvd, either from the download or after burning to DVD. So far I have never had a problem with a corrupt download when downloading using a torrent file.

If you have another suitable maching around try installing on that with your dvd, if it fails again it will most likely be the dvd, if it works there is something wrong with the first machine you were trying to install on - possibly a faulty dvd drive.

tried installing dvd to another machine - no go.

Downloaded from Europe mirror instead of BT in case I got a dodgy download. Europe file said it was 3.9Gb. After downloading it is only 2.62Gb ???

Tried that as well on 2 machines and got I/O boot cd error msg.  >:(

Can people direct me to the mirror that they have recently used (ie in the last couple of days) that the installation was successful for them. I was downloading the single layer amd64 DVD iso

Use the torrent instead, it will check your download for you.  And you can start with the partial download that you grabbed from the mirror already so you don't even have to start all over again.  Mirrors will give you dodgy downloads, not the torrent.

This kind of error usually happens with a faulty DVD drive.

But it can also happen if the burn didn't work correctly or due to a faulty SATA/PATA cable between the motherboard and the drive.

Well I have similar problems with DVD installation (stopped at one specific tar) and then I/O ERROR
I thought DVD might be burned not properly, but I burned it again let MDchecked and it was ok, ran again the installation -> same result I/O ERROR
Then I thought DVD drive might not work properly, replaced the DVD dirve, same result.

Now I think it might be the M/B
0710 Beta 4 is running perfectly
it is only 0710 RC2 that will not install from DVD (as above). CD installation finishes ok, but MCE does not want to start on my machine.

Any help?

Hi,

Are you trying to install the 64 bit version?

If so, try the 32 bit version.  My life has been easier going that way.

Also, upgrade to RC2 please.

Cheers.
