Also looking at Netgear GS608 (low-priced) see info here http://www.netgear.com/Products/Switches/DesktopSwitches/GS608.aspx
it looks like GS608 has one protcol more;
IEEE 802.1p (QoS)
Dont know if it means anything...
For the network cards I am looking on PCI-e versions(keep PCI slots for my tuners). Intel have the PRO/1000 PT Desktop Adapter, look here for info http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/pro1000pt_desktop_adapter.htm

For the intel NIC I see that there is a driver for Linux:
This driver is intended for 2.4.18 through 2.6.x kernels.
see here http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2247&OSFullName=Linux*&lang=eng&strOSs=39&submit=Go%21
