[FIXED]7.10 DVD Installation Failed: AMD Athlon X2 + AMD 780G mobo w SATA drives

Hi all,

First time trying to setup LinuxMCE and looking forward to doing so. I downloaded the DVD [linuxMCE-DVD-0710Beta4-amd64.iso] and when it starts i get the selection screen and select install, then it goes to show the kubuntu screen with progressbar and then goes in that error:

[xxxxxxxxxx] buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0

my hardware is:
MB: Gigabyte GA-MA78G-S2h
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 4400+
HD: Hitachi 500GB SATA
DVD Rom: Lite-On SATA
No graphic card (the chipset on the mb is enough for now)
RAM: 2GB

Now i read that sata drives cause some problems with the installation, but which drive: the DVD or the HD? and is there any work around?

i think (it has been a while though) that the problem with SATA was mixing SATA and PATA (IDE) stuff. also...just to check....did you check the md5 on both the dvd and iso?

no i did not .. how do you do that?

i think i have a problem, i erased the iso file i downloaded.

will LinuxMCE work with ubuntu, i have downloaded the 7.10 ubuntu, if i install that, will the setup cd's work with it? or does it have to be kbunut?


update: ubuntu cd made the same error

you can make an iso from the dvd you have. also...it has to be kubuntu.

i disabled the floppy drive from bios (which i dont have a floppy on the machine actually) but now i get this BusyBox screen with the prompt at initramfs??

I had this problem to on my asus p5k just turn acpi on ENABLED and you can install it without getting the busybox.

i have under Power Management Setup - ACPI Suspend Type which has only two options: S3(STR) or S1(POS) and i tried both. What hapens is now is that after the kbunutu show the splash screen with the progressbar, it just goes into a black screen with the prompt just flashing at the top of the screen and stays there, nothing after.

I had the same problem with my amd 64 x2 4200+ am2 socket.

I found a solution to get the install DVD to boot and run through install, I needed to do the same thing to install from Kubuntu 710 64bit version.

when it first starts and you get the install option, press F6.  Scroll to the right of the boot options, replace the ".../initrd.gz quiet splash --" with ".../initrd.gz quiet noapic --" at the end of the string.

It still have a couple errors, but after a minute or so went through.

well i changed the type of how sata is receognised in the bios (cant really remember to which one right now, the setup is copying the dvd to the drive) but right now it moved past the no hard drive error and ... we'll see how this works.

i will post exactly to which type i changed it to after this run is finished and i can restart

edit:

i had to change it to AHCI & as SATA Type (not IDE), but also i had to attach my ide dvd to install from, it wouldn't install from the sata dvd... its copying dvd right now (i restarted in the middle to remove the ide as its not part of the pc and i thought it will be better to setup, if possible, with whats going to stay in it )

anyways, will update again when (if) install goes ok

Hmmm... so it copied the DVD to your drive and then rebooted... right?

Then you got a Kubuntu boot up progress bar?

Then the screen went blank?

If yes then that is normal... its the AVwizard trying to figure out what screen & connector etc you are using. See the AVwizard Wiki page for details of which numeric keys to use to set the connector and resolution for your screen http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/AVWizard#What_to_do_if_A.2FV_Wizard_does_not_start

i beleive my problems lie in the following:
1. The hard drive mode setup in bios: if i have it as ide then nothing runs after hitting start install, if i have it as AHCI SATA then the installation works but no boot after (totallymaxed i will try you solution right now)
2. the mobo is based on ATI HD3200 chip which is not very easy to figure out on the kubuntu

i beleive that these are my major points

have you checked to make sure the SATA HD is plugged into the right SATA port? sorry...just makin sure. Or by "no boot" did you mean black screen after kubuntu splash screen?
