this may be a silly question..
probably is really!
but I assume you use a USBUIRT to control devices that us IR to control them..
but after spending half an hour on the wiki and a while here..
I still cannot decide.. if
USBUIRT is a physical device or a protocol!
if (as I assume) it IS a device.. where do I get one..
or
if it is not a device.. what device do I use to control IR controlled equipment?
oh yes and do the X10 IR units work with LinuxMCE?
sorry for the newbe questions!
just something I could not get an answer to looking on the forum or wiki (maybe I am asking the wrong question?)

A further question about the UIRT - how many devices can I control at the same time with it?

I have a sky-box and amplifier I wish to control via ir (as they lack rs-232 ports) will one UIRT box be able to control both?

yes it should. The KEY part of it controlling both is having a dual IR blaster. Basically, its an IR blaster that plugs into the one port on the rear of the USB_UIRT and then splits into two separate ir blasters at the end.

EX: my usb_uirt has a re-purposed tivo ir blaster (it splits into two) and i use that to control my TV and receiver all with just the one usb_uirt.

 Grin
I can honestly say, using the amd64 version of both beta3 and beta4, I did not require an ir blaster as long as the components were in close proximity, same set of shelves side by side, it even blasted around the corner to my TV!!!!!
However, for whatever reason, the 32 bit versions of these the onboard blaster did not function, and I had to plug in a dual ir blaster dongle to get it to work. And last evening I added an additional head to my dual blaster (3 now) and the 32 bit version, does in fact work well with the dongle. I control an AV recevier, a Dish 522 receiver, and a Sirius satellite radio now, all form the same USB-UIRT. my blaster dongle is home made, with parts from a local radio shack.

The USB-UIRT is truely an amazing device.

Have Fun!
