VDR stopping!
« on: March 07, 2008, 11:05:18 am »
hi all!
I am having some problems with VDR :(
when I first setup LMCE when I went to live TV a "no signal" banner came up after reading a bit I realised I needed to scan for local channels (hauppage windvr usb2) after a lot more reading I worked out how to scan and produce a channels.con file (and where to put it)
now when I look in pluto it says "custom provider" but when I restart VDR it appears to start with no error message.. then apparently it stops immediatly! anybody want to tell me where to start please?
(Linux newbie sorry)
thanks a lot!!

First place where you can get useful information is /var/log/pluto/<you_VDR_ID>_VDR.log. VDR sends its log messages into /var/log/message and /var/log/syslog.

Have a look this howto (http://tinyurl.com/ysj7gw) which explains the steps performed to configure VDR under LinuxMCE.

Usually if VDR stops like you describe its because it can't find a working DVB card or the location for storing recordings is not available or has zero space available.

After starting vdr like below;

Code: [Select]
sudo /etc/init.d/vdr restart
Then as soon as you have the prompt back type;

Code: [Select]
tail -r /var/log/messages (this will print to the screen everything written to the messages log until you use Ctrl-C to cancel)

Once you have monitored what happens as vdr starts and stops... cut'n paste the output here for us to see.

all the best

hi there Andrew :)
sorry.. things got away from me and I didn't get to even see your post till now :(
(just discovered the "show me new replies to your posts" tag!!
things have moved on a little and I think I am going to have to use Myth instead of VDR
I would have preferred VDR but apparently it does not work well (or is it at all) without the epg info being included in the transmission :(
and I am going to have to use an analog capture card with a cable box for most of my channels
but thanks a lot for your help!
I will be including it in "the folder" lol
I will need a separate room for "the folder" soon lol
have a great weekend
