HDMI Audio
« on: January 22, 2008, 06:35:47 am »
Guys - (Andrew!)

I'm a bit screwed here! I have one of those motherboards that the SPDIF connector is too close to the HDMI connector so I can't connect both at the same time....

I know some people have gotten HDMI Audio working (intermittently, apparently) - can someone give me some pointers on how to get this going (LMCE 0710b3)

It is the nVidia 7050PV/630a chipset..... kinda getting desparate cos its unusable without sound!

That board also has on board header for S/pdif  you will need a Spdif /Bracket

Also I bought a spdif cable that had a smaller head than the monster cable, havent tried it yet I will let you know if it fits.

thx tkmedia - I want to avoid going to the mobo header, but the smaller connector would be interesting. I am also considering trying to carve a bit of the plastic off the HDMI connector and hoping there is nothing sensitive along that edge!

Anybody else got HDMI Audio going yet???

I just tried my new smaller spdif cable even the smaller one doesnt fit so...

Until we get audio over HDMI

its carve away or go to the head of the motherboard.

BTW did you fix the video tearing - that was you right ?

Too slowww! :) I've already carved them both away! Pretty pleased with the result actually! I trimmed the left off the HDMI connector and right off the SPDIF connector and they fit perfectly now! I wasn't sure what I would find inside the HDMI, but was assuming shielding - I trimmed it, and would you believe, by complete chance I cut perfectly between the plastic and the shield, didn't even scrape it nor leave any plastic on it - maybe a good omen :) Both cut like butter!

Yes, that is me - I'm getting very depressed about the video thing. RichardP is trying to help me, but I think he is really busy at the moment.

I've utterly convinced myself that a chipset that is sold with its main feature being PureVideo and the capability of playing HDMI (with HDCP) content, should be able to handle the flickr images in the screensaver at least!

Yes, its not the fastest in the world, but it definitely should be able to handle TV, DVDs and mpg files with plenty of room to spare - wouldn't you say?

It definitely looks like a timing/syncing issue - but I think I have modified my opinion somewhat on it after very closely watching the quality over time and many sources. DVDs, mpgs and even live TV(!) all seem to have a significantly slower frame rate than the screen refresh. I have no idea how to interrogate Xine to tell me what it is achieving (anybody know?) but anecdotally I would say somewhere between 12 and 18 frames per second. Thus, especially with live TV, implying that it is dropping frames somewhere. Either way, this would certainly explain a syncing issue if it can't keep up with refresh rate...

BUT I don't know why.... it seems universal across sources and content, from low bit rate to very high bit rate (although I feel that it does get worse with the higher bit rate stuff). But even normal SD TV, it makes it almost unwatchable. But for the most part, CPU is not maxing out, generally in 1080pUI2Overlay the most it goes is 60% in top (its a dual core, so I'm assuming that this is really 30%??) but for basic stuff, between 10 and 20%....

Any thoughts????

I agree that the HW should be able to handle it tearing seems a lot less on my rear projection Sony than my olevia LCD both currently running 720p.  The sony supports 1080i so I am ging to try that at one point.

To be honest, the tearing is all that much different between 720p and 1080p for me... but I guess it really ought to be..hmmm

Howdy,

I just built up an MD using the MSI K9NGM3 MB with an AMD BE-2400.  Currently net booting as a diskless MD to a 0710B3 i386 core/hybrid.

I'm using the on-board nvidia 7050 HDMI output.  I was hoping to also use the HDMI audio.  During setup, the AV wizard only prompts for Analog, SPDIF coax, SPDIF optical or no sound.  I tried the first three but did not get any sound.  I did confirm BIOS has HDMI audio enabled.

I then searched the forums and this is the only thread I found hinting at a problem with HDMI audio.  I then searched Mantis and found no tickets on HDMI audio.

From this thread I gather I should get a SPDIF bracket for the short term.  For the long term, should we open a Mantis feature request?

Thank you,
Roy

Its not officially supported as a feature, but I know you can get it to work because Totallymaxed said that they have had it working - but he said that it was intermittent and would get back to us. Haven't heard anything since. Was hoping that he may drop a note in on this thread. I'm assuming that the driver simply pipes the digital stream to the HDMI hardware anytime that it is going to the SPDIF (optical or coax), but that the driver for Linux is a bit dodgy.

Thanks for reminding me!!... I will get back to testing HDMI/Audio in the next few days and report back if its improved at all.

So far no luck with audio over HDMI... but its down to driver support.

Finding a board with integrated HDMI audio is not a problem, it is whether it has drivers that support Linux we are having issues with... looks like a nice board tho!
