0710b3 64bit install notes
« on: January 19, 2008, 02:28:35 am »
Hello just finished installing 0710 64 Bit
so far here is what i had to do to get it working (did the CD install for 0710-beta3.)
1. read small text (divers did not display well on my test TV)
2. click on install dvdcss (it did not install it read later for correction)
3. play with the drivers for the card (using the wizard, and switching to a std computer mon that can support 1024x768@65Hz)

to install the lib CSS package you need to use the instructions at http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Restricted_Software_Installation_Guide
basically
sudo apt-get install -y libdvdread3
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh
making sure you have the requirements installed for libdvdread3 aready
so far now it looks like its working
my specs are

Sony Vaio VGP-XL1B

Test core/hybread
ASUS M2NPV-VM AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6150 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Brisbane 2.7GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor Model ADO5200DOBOX
nMEDIAPC HTPC 100BA Black Steel MicroATX Media Center / HTPC Desktop Computer Case 300W Power Supply
LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model LH-20A1L-06 - Retail
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

so for what works
1. can rip(backup) dvds now
2. Sony Vaio VGP-XL1B also works so far (it did not work in 0704)
3. UI2 with medium settings (masking)

more testing on its way

Just use the 'Add software' button in the Orbiter's 'Advanced' screen to add DVDcss or any other software listed in that screen. You must have you Core's WAN side access working though otherwise the 'Add Software' screens software list will appear blank as this list is retrieved dynamically from the repos.

I had to manually install the libdvd as well

When I try to Install through the add software it states

Aborted: no internet connection.

Funny I am posting from the KDE desktop where it says "no internet connection" ::)

Hmmm... somethings not configured correctly on your core. Post the network config from Web Admin here so we can see what your setup looks like.

Here is how my home core is setup using a single NIC;

EXTERNAL_IFACE     eth0
EXTERNAL_MAC    00:1D:92:09:77:9C
EXTERNAL_IP    192.168.20.99
EXTERNAL_NETMASK    255.255.255.0
EXTERNAL_DHCP    0
INTERNAL_IFACE    eth0:0
INTERNAL_MAC    00:1D:92:09:77:9C
INTERNAL_IP    192.168.80.1
INTERNAL_NETMASK    255.255.255.0
GATEWAY    192.168.20.1
DNS1    192.168.20.1
DNS2    192.168.20.1

The gateway address is my router - my routers WAN connection goes to my cable modem

Did a complete reinstall (64b3 dvd) did not change any settings when I attempt to install SW I get
Aborted: no connection to internet if I switch to  a terminal I can manually install software (libdvd at least).

Is it possible it has to do with me being in the US ( can't imagine how) (dns resolving issue  ??)

I have to say, I'm having a similar problem, described in more detail here http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=3959.msg22464#msg22464

EXTERNAL_IFACE eth1
EXTERNAL_MAC 00:50:8D:B2:06:F4
EXTERNAL_IP 192.168.1.5
EXTERNAL_NETMASK 255.255.255.0
EXTERNAL_DHCP 1
INTERNAL_IFACE eth0
INTERNAL_MAC
INTERNAL_IP 192.168.80.1
INTERNAL_NETMASK 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY 192.168.1.254
DNS1 192.168.1.254
DNS2 192.168.1.254

As you can see, my interfaces are the wrong way around - I used the swap function - but this is the only way that I can get it so that both interfaces have an address. The Kubuntu GUI applet contradicts this by saying that I have an eth1 and eth2 (eth2 being disabled and I cannot enable it, assuming this is because there is no cable connected), as does ifconfig -a (-a because the internal interface isn't plugged into anyting yet so the interface is down, but it says that this is eth2 with no IP). Yet the admin console says that I have an eth0 with an IP address, but as you can see no MAC - I did notice somewhere and also in the install process something complained about a bad MAC.

Thing is, I can browse the Internet happily from this config, ping, etc to the Internet, just the software is not even displayed in the list (either in UI2 or the web admin) and it can't set the time using ntp....

Try editing /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules, and maybe /etc/network/interfaces and/or /etc/iftab as well if you even have one.

Thanks Zaerc - I did end up finding how to do the udev thing (didn't have an iftab file which confused me for a while), added a new .rules file and configured it through that. Also learned that the MAC address is case sensitive in those files and must be lower case :)

As soon as I forced the right adaptors to eth0 and eth1, the networking sprang to life and started discovering things!

My problem now is - although it discovered all my media (I ran the resync in Media Files Sync) and it all appeared in the orbiter. The next day all my media is gone. I looked in Media File Sync again and I can see it all, they are all ticked indicating that the file is on disk as well as in the database, and on my PC (sorry, all the media is on a Windows share on the Internal network), I can see DCEROUTER logging on and off successfully as the Guest account - no security or audit failures.

When I re-run the resync option, the logging window that pops up grabs the rows from the database successfully, but when it goes to find the files on disk it says "Device is offline, skipping the file /home/public/data/videos/Windows Share: Media [39]/TV/American Dad/American Dad - 1x13 - Stan of Arabia 2.avi <0x2af97b75a8c0>" for every piece of media!!!

It definitely isn't off line, AND I can see LMCE successfully connecting to the share...

When I boot, I see a message at the login screen just before x starts that says words to the effect of CIFS VFS: mount failed return code = -111 and that it is aborting the operation

Zaerc - do you have any idea what might be causing it to loose the connection (or at least think it is??)

I'm also getting the CIFS VFS: mount failed return code = -111 on startup...  however my media is still there...  after I first installed Beta2 I had the same problem AND my media disappeared..  I posted a mantis but could not reproduce..  a reboot brought everything back.. so the mantis was closed...  I never had these problems with 7.04 and so far with Beta3 my media is not disappearing but I'm still getting the CIFS error on startup...

Thanks rrambo - to be completely honest, this isn't the first time it has happened to me, but I always assumed that as I was running a single NIC with both interfaces on the same network that this was confusing it. But now I have it setup with 2 NICs in exactly the proper way - I have completely rebuilt (several times) since the last time this happened. This is also b3, I have tried rebooting and it makes no difference. In KDE desktop, however, I can easily browse to /home/public/data/videos/Windows Share [39] etc etc, and play all the media with Kaffine. In fact whilst I am playing it, I hit another resync and it still says the device is offline!

Given that the Windows machine is comfirming the connection when I do the resync, the only thing I can think of is that LMCE is able to connect to the PC's share, but unable to mount it - I'm assuming that LMCE uses one form of mount (presumable CIFS), but the desktop and Kaffine are mounting it a different way???? (SMB?)

I'm really starting to get in trouble with the other half! So I am VERY keen to get over this hump! I still have to solve the video tearing, frame rate, and various other issues.

I installed 7.10 beta 3 amd64 on the core and everything is flawless.  BUT, the dreaded but, I can't install the additional software; libcss, HD ripping tools and  64 bit codecs for windows video software.  On the Core I could install these software packages but the 64 bit MD will not.  I get a Download for valid source for software failed.

Network is up and running properly.  Internet OK and accessable from the MD.

Yeah, I don't fully understand what's going on either...  like I said, this issue never came up on 7.04...  in all honesty though I haven't had time to look at any logs...  once I do, then I will feel like I can contribute something useful..  I'm still having an issue of being unable to install the 64bit version (well, it installs, but then I have lots of problems) so I had to revert back to 32bit...  I will say, with UI2masking I have no tearing issues anymore with the drivers included in 7.10 for my geforce 6150..  video playback is flawless..  but (another dreaded but) I still have issues with 7.10 in that I can be watching a video and it just stops and goes to the ff/rew screen for no reason...  which could be related to cifs and my mount errors...  again, I have to sift through the logs..
