[Q] Orbiter hardware

Hello,

I am new to Linuxmce, but have used mythtv for many years. Somewhere in the near future, I'd like to use linuxmce as an intercom in our house. So... would a properly chosen orbiter be enough for that, or do I need a Media Director? I was thinking to use nokia N800 units, but would that actually work if set up as an orbiter?

Hi Mark,

The Orbiter is just the UI to the LinuxMCE system. Each Media Director also has an integral Orbiter to provide a local UI to control it with but   it is the Media Director that has the media playback functionality. Therefore where you want to actually interface to some Media Playback equipment ie an Amplifier + speakers you need to feed the audio in from a local MD attached to it. The Media files themselves may actually reside on the Core or on another devices hard drive or be streamed like TV live from the Core.

In answer to your question, I don't believe the intercom feature is part of the orbiter. The mic and speakers are connected to the media directory ... which is controlled either by the builtin orbiter function (i.e. a remote control and the media director display) or can be controlled by an external orbiter such as the Nokia N800.

Now, I think somewhere I saw a thread where someone was trying to get a web pad to served as a media director, but not sure where it was. That would be neat to have a portable media director, orbiter with built in mic/speakers for intercom.

Actually, intercom is just a simple phone connected to the Asterisk + camera. This is a small part of LMCE. It can do much more for you

   So... to set up an intercom system between 4 locations, all hardware I would need is 4 IP phones (if I forget about video)? Any suggested types/brands?

Actually, it would be nice to be able to just announce stuff on the fourth floor, while I am on the first (i.e. people wouldn't have to pick up the phone). Something like that would probably require MediaDirectors, right?
