I just had a unit which was storing archived movies off the RAID fail on me after 3 and a half weeks of use! Similar stories all over the net, extremely high failure rate! DO NOT TOUCH!

I googled on "Seagate 750GB failure" and found little if anything. Can you point us in the right direction?

We've been informally tracking failure rates of Seagate versusa Western Digital versus Maxtor for the last four years. We see a much lower failure rate in the Seagate IDE/SATA drives. But even top level industrial drives occasionally are DOA.

oh...i was thinking that would have been even worse. to have tested it and tried breaking it in and then it died. still sucks. im still holding out for the TB drives to drop some but thats not the best news for anyone wanting the 750s from seagate. ive gotten bad drives from all the major brands now. i think i have had the most trouble with maxtor and usually had the most faith in seagate. ill definitely keep an eye out for reviews on the TB drives before i decide which to get. better luck with your next drive thom.

We've had bad luck at work with WD drives..  the drive I bought for my nas here at home is a 750GB seagate..  so far so good..  it's been serving my movies for about 6 months now..  hope it continues to work well...

I've been using 4 750's from seagate for 2 months now with no problems. I've got them in the bottom compartment of the antec p180B case and one thing I noticed is that without proper ventilation these things get crazy hot. Due to the design (fault) of the case it's easy for sata/power cables from the drives to get stuck in the fan  cooling the hard drives in the bottom compartment of the p180B case. This is what initially happened to me and the drives got crazy hot (I burnt my finger on one of them!). I fixed the fan blockage and now it's fine. Smartd doesn't detect any problems and neither does the seagate software. Here's to hoping they continue to work great...

I had them inside a consus snap-in external case, and I hear a sound that is similar to squeaking from the drive, the device never comes onto the buss at all (not even a connect). The case itself is a giant heatsink and is fanless.
