No sound on ripped DVD

-Hybrid box.
-Installed off of DVD.
-ECS motherboard, 1.8gig pentium4, 20gig hard drive(for testing), 1 gig ram, nVidia 6200.
-Works great.
-except...
...Ripped DVD has no sound when played back. Other files when played back have sound, as well as DVD's played from the dvd drive. Anyone else have this problem?

-I'm just cutting my teeth on linux. If you have encountered/fixed this problem please keep it simple.
