comunication between devices

I'm a newbie with Linux MCE. I installed with the dvd install for my core, Then I hooked up my NAS and it detected that fine and added all the media. I then used my old laptop to use as a thin client MD. I booted it up via the network and the core sent the install and that went fine as well. My question is, can I control the MD with the core or vice versa? I'm using the interface U1 and when i click on location of the device in the lower right corner and pick the room that contains the other device, I don't see any media to play or anyways to control it. Am I looking in the wrong spot or is there some sort of installation/configuration problems. Thanks for any help or direction to a guide to explain this problem.
