There's a corruption in the data that gzip is complaining about. Prob from a dodgey burn - try burning it again with a lower burn speed, or worst, download it again (less likely but poss...)

you need to download a program to generate an MD5 sum on your iso. then you need to compare the MD5 you get, to the one listed where you downloaded the iso. if they match, then the download was fine and the burn was bad. if they dont, you'll need to redownload it. check that MD5 sum and if it matches burn it again.

yeah that definitely sucks. theres been a lot of that though. sometimes people are lucky and its just the burn that went bad.

I had pretty much the same error. And, it seems to be because my DVD-Rom drive is fairly old, and can't handle the data stream the way that it's being read...
I copied the two parts of the archive to the HD and ran cat linux-mce* | gunzip -c | tar xvf and that worked OK, Where the same command failed when the archive was on the DVD. Unfortunately I don't know what steps need to be done after that.
So, I'm starting to install kubuntu, and will proceed with the CD install method.
BTW: The next version WONT!! force me to reinstall from scratch RIGHT???

You really should do the Kubuntu then the two CD install instead.
Takes slightly longer, but there are much fewer possible problems.
As to the burning speed, if your DVD drive is as crappy as you claim in your first post I'd burn it at 2x or even 1x... (most likely not at all, but it's your call)

Not config options per se, but it's more "open" as to what you can use for hardware as you can do a couple of things in Kubuntu before loading LMCE.
I would say that it's just "safer" alltough I don't know why.
I have not gotten the DVD to work ever (tried three times), but have three succesfull "three CD" installs.

I downlaod LinuxMCE DVD, tried to install it, and what I nightmare! First of all, it screwup real good my Vista partition really bad to the ponit that I have to reinstalled Vista. This thing did not boot at all. Somehow I forced it to continue after getting an error about job control not active or something like that. By the way , I have the Sony laptop FZ180.
From this experience I learned that I should not wonder too much away from the best distros: Mandriva dn Suse!
