Its not just the provider but the location as well that control the cable boxes. Comcast may seem monolithic but every region acts independently. Even pushing out the HDMI fixes to make the boxes work took over a year after Motorola sent them the firmware upgrade. However its worth a look.

Have a look at ReelBox Lite - http://www.reel-multimedia.com/rmm-english/lite-features.html. It's based on Video Disk Recorder - VDR (it'd be good to have a full integration with it in LMCE). As you may see the box features Smartcard Reader - NeotionCrypt. So, I suppose that VDR can decode commercial Live TV channels. Moreover, it has a plugin which gets stream from Sky box with valid subscription and record it as ordinary TV signal. It's also good feature for European LMCE folks.
